The Ledge #717: 70s Punk Debut Albums

With this being a holiday weekend, I was determined to do a very listener-friendly “fun” episode. Of course, when I say listener-friendly, I’m not talking about the sort of nonsense on commercial radio. Not, what that means for The Ledge is the sort of legendary bands and songs that all Ledge listeners enjoy…or should. The actual theme came together this past Sunday when I was listening to the first Stiff Little Fingers album, Inflammable Material. It was at that moment that I decided that I was only going to listen to debut albums this week. That idea naturally transformed into a theme for tonight’s show. There’s nothing but the first full-length releases of 70’s punk rock bands. These are primarily records that impacted me in a way that few records of the next 45 years would. From that first Ramones album that arrived at my house when I was suffering from the chicken pox through not only the true legends of that era to a record I purchased simply because I loved that the band was called The Drones. Obviously, this is a theme that I will return to quite often in the next few months. I mean, come on, […]

The Ledge #638: The Hudson Basement Excavaton Project

If you follow me on the various social media platforms (paulisded) you’ve probably seen a variety of pictures with the tagline “The Hudson Basement Excavaton Project”. A little explanation is needed. Decades ago, my son needed a rack to store his records as he had followed in the old man’s footsteps and put together his own sizable library. As I did not at that point even own a turntable, my records were all boxed up and stored in the basement. A few years later, home renovatons meant that these boxes were joined by more boxes of CD’s, books, magazines, and other junk that needed to be moved out of the way of new carpet and paint. The original boxes of records were now buried. When I returned to vinyl a decade ago, I had a feeling that somewhere there just had to be a bunch of albums. I mean, come on. I would never sell or give away Replacements records, right? This feeling carried on whenever I saw a good stash of used records at local stores, or when a classic album was reissued. There just has to be records somehwere/anywhere! I would take tentative searches while doing laundry from […]

The Ledge #413: Scott’s Faves Vol. 1

The Ledge #413: Scott’s Faves Vol. 1

A few days ago I came up with the idea of putting together a show of nothing but my favorite songs of all time. A few hours later, however, I ended up with a folder of almost 200 songs. Hmmmm. So here is the introduction of a new series of shows devoted to the great tracks that have made me who I am today. Of course, a lunatic like myself has to come up with unnecessary rules. So the main rule I’m abiding by in this new Ledge series is that I’m going to ignore most of the obvious bands. Everybody knows I love Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, David Bowie, and other similar giants. And how would one just pick a single song by acts like these? So for the most part we’re going with artists that should be bigger. Artists that should be on every so-called “classic rock” playlsit. Of course, The Kinks are one of those kind of bands, but how can I ignore “I’m Not Like Everybody Else”? So it’s a part of tonight’s show dedicated to tracks primarily from the 60’s and 70’s. I’m excited to exhaust the folder of tunes […]
