The Ledge #717: 70s Punk Debut Albums

With this being a holiday weekend, I was determined to do a very listener-friendly “fun” episode. Of course, when I say listener-friendly, I’m not talking about the sort of nonsense on commercial radio. Not, what that means for The Ledge is the sort of legendary bands and songs that all Ledge listeners enjoy…or should. The actual theme came together this past Sunday when I was listening to the first Stiff Little Fingers album, Inflammable Material. It was at that moment that I decided that I was only going to listen to debut albums this week. That idea naturally transformed into a theme for tonight’s show. There’s nothing but the first full-length releases of 70’s punk rock bands. These are primarily records that impacted me in a way that few records of the next 45 years would. From that first Ramones album that arrived at my house when I was suffering from the chicken pox through not only the true legends of that era to a record I purchased simply because I loved that the band was called The Drones. Obviously, this is a theme that I will return to quite often in the next few months. I mean, come on, […]

The Ledge #494: Sorry Ma I’ve Got Some Reissues To Play

The Ledge #494: Sorry Ma I’ve Got Some Reissues To Play

I’m sure that all Ledge fans could have predicted this week’s episode. With today’s release of the 40th anniversary deluxe edition of the very first Replacements album, Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash, it was pretty obvious that there would be a deep dive into this box set. The great news is that this box does not disappoint. Besides a desperately needed remaster of the orginal album, this 4 CD/1 LP set includes 67 previously unreleased tracks. There’s home demos, basement recordings, studio outtakes, and the band’s earliest professionally recorded show. How could I not make this the main reason of the show? But there’s much more. With this being reissue and box set season, I go through a number of other similar releases. Yet I also have some harsh words for a couple of them. There’s also an opportunity for listeners to compare two versions of the same Heartbreakers song. Is the newly discovered “master” of L.A.M.F.’s “Born to Lose” actually better than the “restored” version from the 2012 remix? Let me know what you think. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists […]

Live Ledge #391: Songs About The Ramones

Live Ledge #391: Songs About The Ramones

Earlier this week I noticed that over the last few weeks I’ve acquired a handful of brand new releases with songs about The Ramones. Knowing that I had quite a few more on my master library, this became the quest for the week. Then I discovered a site that in 2014 had compiled 400 different songs about this fabulous band. Ok, that filled a few holes in the playlist! This is obviously a fun show that takes a few surprising twists and turns. Who would have guessed that singer/songwriters such as Leeroy Stagger and Jesse Malin had songs about “da boys”? Or that a band like Latte+ has had such tributes on more than one record?
