Whew - It's a Heat Wave - time for a Cold beer. I've got a 22 ounce bomber from my favorite brewery Sierra Nevada opened up and ready to taste. This one is decorated very nicely with lotsa info on the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp road tour (see link below). Nice packaging and a great price - let's see if it tastes great too.
Pours a nice amber with a structured foamy head. Smell of tropical fruits and pine. Hmm - nice first taste with some Pineapple and caramel - finishes a wee bit too bitter for me. Nice beer that lacks a bit of luster. Lackluster is the word here. Highly drinkable and don't worry, I won't be pouring this one out. I love me some Sierra Nevada beers and have always honored them as one of the pioneers of the first craft beer revolution, but I won't be going back to get another of these. But hey, it's limited, so I might not get a chance anyway. If you have a choice out in the market, go with their Torpedo - that one is great!

A quiet evening at home with a Spanish Red. Yes, I've uncorked the latest vintage of Trentatre, a wonderful Spanish made blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Montepulciano. Picked this one up at Trader Joe's yesterday and had a glass last night. Wow - this wine should retail in the $20 region. Great value at about $6 US.
The nose is awash in layers of mocha, espresso bean and black currants. On the palate, plum, more espresso and a bit of oak (smokey vanilla). The red's body is medium to light and the wine finishes beautifully. I was thinking about grilled Salmon tonight, but stumbled upon a great Brooklyn Vegan article on pizzafied album covers and it's making me crave some Pizza. Hmmmm, this wine would go great with a grilled pie.

Scorching day out, so I've retreated to the cool environs of the Pinhead Studios for some pinball and a wonderful homebrew, courtesy of Brent at the Isolated Desert Compound Brewing Company. I reviewed his first batch a few months ago and he has been working with Greg Lonesome of the Rock and Roll Manifesto on some tweaks to the recipe. Brent sent me some of the new batch and it is stellar. Wonderful toasted bready malt flavors and just a hint of hops make this a wonderful beer on this hot day.
Thanks Brent!

GET IT HERE FROM SCREAMING CROW RECORDS!
When it comes to High Energy Punk Rock n’ Roll, New Jersey’s 20 year veterans Electric Frankenstein are definitely at the top of the list. Back that up with fire breathing juggernauts, The Cheats from Pittsburgh and you have one of the most exciting Rock releases of 2014.
The split vinyl LP known as “Rockamania 1” will feature 3 new tracks from each band and a cover song. That’s right, NO CDs! Vinyl only! Okay, the new songs will be available digitally, but the covers won’t! So if you want to hear Electric Frankenstein’s version of The Dead Boys’ “Son of Sam” or The Cheats’ take on The Backstreet Girls’ “Loaded,” you better dig that old turntable out of your parents’ garage!
Package includes grey/black swirled vinyl, an 11×17 show poster from the bands’ LP release party and a cool two sided beer coaster!

Putting together the Grosse Pointe Blank show this afternoon, as I'll be heading down to Amoeba Records in San Francisco to do some crate digging tomorrow. Unscrewed a 2012 Layer Cake Malbec from the Mendoza region and it is tasting mighty fine. Tried the 2009 version back in August of 2011 and it was a winner ----- >
2009 Layer Cake Malbec. The 2012 vintage has a very nice smokiness, as the varietal should and some a nice fruit forward initial impact with a smooth and lingering finish. Highly recommended and should go great with the Tri-Tip that I'll be grilling up this afternoon.
Cheers!

Well, Mr. Postman has been good to me these last few weeks. Cheers go out to both Richard and Dan for posting some beer and tunes to me. First up is the beer - Allagash White.
Allagash White is the flagship beer for the Allagash Brewery, founded in 1994 in Portland, Maine. This beer is a traditional Witbier, brewed with wheat in the place of barley and is bottle conditioned, so it is nice andcloudy and you get a bit of a B-Vitamin bomb at the bottom of the bottle. The wheat used gives the beer a nice light color and a very white head. The taste is just heavenly with lemon, coriander and orange flavours shining through. It has been a bit of a scorcher today at the Pinhead Compound, so it is perfect that I have this beer that is light and crisp to go with a bit of Pinball and some great music.

Scuzz Bombe - the latest album from the band King Kool. A bit of history in relation to the band and my discovery of them. I am a follower of the band The Bonnevilles on ye olde facebook machine and one of their recent posts featured Dan Donovan of King Kool wearing one of the Bonneville's t-shirts in a video. Well, there is your stamp of approval - I needed to hear more! I subsequently played a King Kool song on the show a few months back and Dan contacted me and wondered if I would like to hear the whole album. Well - the answer was a quick - YES!

It's a scorcher outside this June afternoon. Good thing I have the deep dark confines of the Pinhead Studios to retreat to and enjoy a rare treat. Now, I can find some of the Victory Brewing company's beer out here on the left coast, like the HopDevil IPA and the Prima Pils, but some of the more limited releases are hard to get out here, as the Brewery is located in Pennsylvania. That is where my friend and fellow Real Punk Radio cohort Greg Lonesome comes into the picture. You see, I've been trading some beers with him in sort of a Brew Exchange Pact (you send me some local beers and I'll send you some local beers). So, one of the beers he sent my way was the DirtWolf.
This beer pours a bit hazy and with a nice tall white head. Smells dark and danky, but wow, what a wonder on the tongue. Those same dark and dank flavors provide a solid foundation and then a nice high note is given with a wonderful Tangerine, Citrus flavor that finishes the experience. That is DirtWolf. What a wonderful beer that we need to have out here in California. So, if you are listening Victory - please send some out our way!
So the facts - 8.7 % ABV. Whole Flower Citra, Chinook, Simcoe and Mosaic hops.
Aha - Mosaic - that must be the citrusy tangeriney flavor that I'm getting - absolutely love beers with that hop featured! Mucho thanks Greg - see the link to his great show below.

Music You Need To HearVictory has a wonderful video overview of the Brewery that I've included below - Cheers!

Another rare beer here - Isolated Desert Compound Brewing's Manifesto Mango brewed up by listener Brent and in collaboration with Greg Lonesome of the Rock N Roll Manifesto. This one is way over the top - at 10.5% alcohol, this Triple hits you with a burst of Mango and then rolls you over with some malty, caramelly (is that a word?) goodness. The only drawback was the finish - wow bitter as hell! Didn't stop me from enjoying it though....
From the label - A triple IPA brewed with Mango and generously hopped with Centennial, Columbus, Nugget and Simcoe hops.
Thanks for sending me one my way Brent - look closely above - 300 points when lit!

PUNK is a force to be reckoned with in The Ungovernable Force, a grindhouse film where punks and bums unite against fascist cops!!!
“A New Movie… About A New Generation”
It’s 2014: forty years have passed since the Ramones first played CBGB; thirty-nine since John Lydon joined the Sex Pistols; thirty-six years ago Steve Ignorant claimed that punk was dead and three years later Wattie claimed it wasn’t; thirty-two years ago Class of 1984 was released and thirty years ago it was Suburbia. Now it’s The Ungovernable Force, showcasing the subculture and its oft-misunderstood opportunistic nihilism and basic humanistic ethics over sanctity and conformity.

Much like the California legend that is Pliny the Younger, there is a legendary beer out of Pennsylvania called Nugget Nectar. Brewed once a year in February, I was lucky enough to secure a couple of bottles from 2 friends in the Eastern half of this great nation. Both Richard and Greg sent me bottles to try. I'm so happy that they did, as this years's version is just as great as the 2013 (reviewed here --->
Nugget).
The taste - just as heavenly as I remembered - balanced and perfect. Lotsa malt character from the Pilsner, Vienna and Munich malts with a nice balance from the Warrior, Tomahawk, Simco and Palisade hop mix.
Peach, Pineapple and Pine hit you on the first taste and the malt backbone of Caramel and Custard flavors leave you wanting more.

Happy Mothers Day to all! Kicking back this afternoon and getting ready to grill up some steaks for the family and the very best Mother my 2 daughters could have. Poured an interesting homebrew brewed up by Brent at his Isolated Desert Compound Brewery. This is a Bitter with a couple of extra hops thrown in - El Dorado and Ahtanum to be specific. Love the malt profile and the hops are an great adjunct to that. This beer is a collaboration between Brent and Greg Lonesome of the Rock N Roll Manifesto and I know they are making some changes to the second batch. I think that it is great the way it is! It will be interesting which direction they go, though.... If it was me I'd try a single hop variant with the Bitter profile and see what a bunch of Mosiac hops would taste like, but - hey - I'm no brewer....
Special thanks go out to Brent for the beer and I hope he likes the Ninkasi that I sent him in return.
Cheers,
Jerry

Just two years ago, the punk scene dropped the proverbial soap and got a tender, uh… introduction to the band of ex-cons known as Masked Intruder. The four ski mask-clad criminals broke out of prison and into everywhere’s hearts with their perfectly crafted self-titled album. Spending your days in the slammer must give you time to practice guitar riffs because the record was a flawless masterpiece of heart-on-sleeve pop punk, start to finish.
After several tours and countless near-run-ins with the law, Masked Intruder is back with a new album, M.I., out May 27 on Fat Wreck Chords. (From what the Intruders tell us, Fat Mike has some pretty nice stuff at his house. Or at least he used to before he let the band in.) You can listen to the first song off of it, “The Most Beautiful Girl”, in which the band seems to have gotten a lot less stalkery and a lot more, dare we say it, mature? Have they been making those mandatory visits to their parole officers after all?
