At long last (longer than it should have been because...well because time is a social construct really) Dave Hause returns for his second appearance on (*both laugh*)! When last we spoke (Episode 25 if you're keeping score at home), Dave had just self-released a double EP of Patty Griffin and Paddy Costello/Dillinger Four covers. We were still in Pandemic Year One and that project served as a fun and unique way to stay productive and creative and to dip his toes into navigating through the "new normal" waters.
Fast-forward eighteen months (yes, really...18 months, almost to the day...remember when I said time was a social construct) and it was time for round two! The centerpiece of this installment was Dave's latest solo album, "Blood Harmony." It was released last October on his own record label, but because the vinyl is still trickling its way out, I don't feel QUITE so bad about catching up at the six month post-release mark. "Blood Harmony" found Dave and his brother Tim working together again, this time in Nashville. The duo and producer Will Hoge (himself not only a brilliant songwriter and masterful producer but a veteran of this show as well - see Episode 12) holed up at Sound Emporium with a slew of heavy-hitting studio musicians (Sadler Vaden, Tom Bukovac, Garry Tallent!!?!?!). "Blood Harmony" finds Hause running headlong down the Americana path that he'd been at least tip-toeing down for the last decade.
We talked about the album, and the recording, and Will Hoge's greatness, and the idea of "chasing the song." We also talked about his ongoing partnership with Tim (including work on Tim's own upcoming debut solo album) and about therapy and about touring in a never-ending pandemic and a lot more, as we are want to do.
While you're at it, check out the rest of Dave's bandcamp releases - lots of live shows and some newer B-sides and more: https://davehause.bandcamp.com/

I have a few friends who are no fans of Record Store Day, but I love it. Yes, everyday is Record Store Day for me, but it is one of the few days of the year that I’m a social butterfly. I absolutely love the bonding of music geeks in the lines outside stores, and over the years I’ve actually made some friendships out of these same people who brave the elements on this day. We actually kind of look out for each other. If one of us is looking for something quite rare, it’s not unusual for another one of us to grab it for that person. I had that happen just this last week when I arrived a few minutes later than usual, but really needed to get a copy of a certain release.
For me, this year’s version of the holiday may have been the best ever. I’ve never had a list so long of titles that I “needed”. Plus, my name is on one of them (the Jay Bennett two-record set that included Gorman Bechard’s “Where Is Jay Bennett” on DVD). Besides the obligatory Replacements live album, guitarist Bob Stinson saw the release of a record he recorded with the Bleeding Hearts shortly before his death. The late Kim Shattuck of The Muffs saw a collection of demos. Lou Reed’s first solo studio session hit the shelves. There was another great compilation of rare punk tracks in the Soul Jazz series “Punk 45”.
Of course, there was also the usual pile of live releases this year, including sets by Stiff Little Fingers, Reigning Sound, Pixies, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Roky Erickson, and so many more. Ramones albums that have not been available on vinyl for 20 years were collected in a relatively cheap box set. The list goes on and on, and tonight’s episode samples a wide variety of these records.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion!

For a large percentage of Wilco fans, the glory days of that band were in the late 90’s and early 00’s, with classic albums such as Being There, Summerteeth, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It’s no coincidence that those records, along with collaborations with Billy Bragg on previously-unrecorded Woody Guthrie tunes, featured multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett. And when I say multi-instrumentalist, I don’t mean he can set down his guitar to play piano on a few tracks. Bennett was a savant. He was a man who could pretty much turn any object into a tuneful tool.
Bennett was fired from Wilco in 2001 during the latter stages of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’s creation, and his dismissal was controversially included in 2002’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” documentary. After a series of critically acclaimed solo albums, Bennett tragically passed away in 2009.
Bennett’s story is finally being told with this week’s release of “Where Are You, Jay Bennett?”, and co-directors Gorman Bechard and Fred Uhter are interviewed in this week’s episode about a film that Bechard says he made to “right the wrongs” of that previous documentary. Besides his controversial dismissal from Wilco, Jeff’s entire life is showcased, from his mom proudly showing his childhood art to stories behind some of the final songs he wrote before his death. We also discuss the special Record Store Day double vinyl package of Bennett’s last two solo albums, which comes with a DVD copy of the film.

The music world was shocked when news came out on April 9 that Chris Bailey, the leader of The Saints, had passed away. This legendary band actually predated The Damned and The Sex Pistols with the self-release of their classic first single, “(I’m) Stranded”. The original lineup went on to put out a trio of great records before they imploded. Bailey kept The Saints going, though, and scored a hit in 1986 with “Just Like Fire Would”, a song that Bruce Springsteen would cover over two decades later.
Tonight’s show begins with featured sets of those first three albums, then follows up with a few tracks from the latter era, along with a handful of solo tracks. The rest of the show is highlighted by some great covers of songs by The Saints. Nashville Pussy, Nomads, The Fall, and The Mono Men are just a few of the bands who added new life to these great tunes.

I was so excited to upload last night’s episode of The Ledge, as I believed I had a pretty cool theme put together. Unfortunately, once the live broadcast on RealPunkRadio concluded, I discovered that my recording device had malfunctioned.
Still determined to share the episode, I decided to rerecord on Saturday afternoon. The first ten minutes of the broadcast had survived, so I included that bit and then recut my intros before reconstructing the rest of the show with the song files.
What you get here is the natural successor to my earlier shows devoted to the magnificent year of 1977. This time, however, you’ll hear covers of songs played on those shows. And what an eclectic group of artists. You even hear southern rock legends The Outlaws bravely take on an Elvis Costello song in 1977. Who knew that even existed?
I hope you enjoy this episode. A little warning, though. There may be some fluctuations in the levels, as some tracks are mastered louder than others. My broadcast program takes care of that during live shows, and I did attempt to manually boost a couple of really quiet tunes.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. Once again, the wealth of new music released over the last month has been staggering. There’s teh return of some greats from the past, such as Cindy Lawson, Jon Spencer, and The Len Price 3. There’s not one but two records from Wild Billy Childish’s The William Loveday Intention. David Nance, Kevin Morby, and Daniel Romano continue to blur the genre lines with their new albums. Rum Bar Records and Red On Red Records have their usual great projects. Topping it off is a fabulous (and free!) tribute to Guided By Voices featuring a number of The Ledge regulars.

A few weeks ago, I put together a show featuring nothing but UK rock and roll from 1977. Well, here’s the US counterpart, two hours of some of the greatest records ever produced. And this show jumps around through genres quite a bit more than the UK episode, with not only some blistering punk rock but power pop, classic rock, and even some more experimental material that greatly influenced bands that came years and decades later.
What’s also remarkable is just how much material some of these artists created in this fabulous year. Cheap Trick, Iggy Pop, and The Ramones all put out two full albums during these twelve months, while others followed up with another new album at the beginning of the next year. It was certainly a year of creativity.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. When Malibu Lou sent me an advance of the new Dogmatics single, “Drop That Single”, I knew I had to create something special to highlight it’s debut on The Ledge. After all, I’ve been a fan of the band since I first discovered their Homestead Records’ releases while DJ’ing on KAUR way back in the mid-80’s.
Given that the tune celebrates one of my favorite passions, playing records, it seemed natrual to create a show dedicated to my favorite physical format. So tonight’s broadcast is all about records, and not just the format itself. There are tunes about record stores, record thieves, record collectors, turntables, needles.

Every now and then you come across an album that becomes a benchmark moment for you; like, life existed before that album and then the world shifted and things weren't the same after that. My own personal list includes the likes of: Vs. Recipe For Hate. Question The Answers. Badmotorfinger. The '59 Sound. The Low End Theory. Stay Positive. 36 Chambers. Caution. 1372 Overton Park. And now, realistically, The Great American Novel.
If you're unfamiliar, Proper. are a three-piece formed in NYC roughly 5/6 years ago (as The Great Wight initially) but hailing really from a variety of locations across the country and bringing with them all of their collective experiences and musical influences and creating something that hasn't really been done before. I remember hearing their last album, I Spent The Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better admittedly a little late and thinking "damn...I've never really heard anything like this before." The new album, The Great American Novel, takes all of the things that were great about the last one and pushes the needles way past 10. It's important music. It's music about alienation and about not fitting in and about being a queer person of color in a land that, despite it being 2022, is at times becoming even less comfortable with people that check those boxes. It's raw and it's powerful and it's somehow still hopeful. Oh, and if fucking shreds. I feel lucky that we were able to catch up not just with Erik Garlington who spearheads the whole thing but with the full band (Natasha Johnson on bass and Elijah Watson on drums and whom you may also know from his "day job" as a journalist for Okay Player). Watch/listen as I outkick my coverage yet again.
In the last episode, we heard about the terrible things going on in the Ukraine.
We now hear from TJ Poznan (Poland) of how even our global Deathpunk micro-society, the Turbojugend, can immediately help supporting our big hearted sailors and sailorettes, while they are constantly helping people in need with the most basic things of life. This one is for true solidarity, Jugends of the world!

While part one of this month’s new release series focused on relatively new artists, this week’s successor is full of bands that have been around for quite some time. There’s the first album in over 30 years by The Rave Ups. The Hoodoo Gurus return after a ten year hiatus. There’s much-anticipated albums by the likes of Superchunk, Spiritualized, Spoon, Guided By Voices and Night Shop. There’s the solo debut of former Rocket From the Crypt/Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes leader Swami John Reis. And there’s, like always, a ton of brand new bands unleashing some powerful rock and roll.

As the world is watching the developments in the Ukraine in shock, TJ Radio reaches out and talked to President Kosmobronson from the Ukrainian Galician Pussycats chapter. Working as a combat medic, we find one of our fellow sailormen in the middle of a senseless, sick war, who openly speaks out about the naked truth and the brutal situation in the Ukraine and his daily life, which has changed in the matter of only a few days.

I don't think it's overstating things to call Hot Water Music not only one of the most influential and respected bands in the last three decades of this scene, but one of the most genre-defining bands as well. For the second time in this show's history, we got to chat up one of the founding members! This time, the victim was Jason Black, who in my mind is one of the most under-rated bass players in rock music. We talk about whether being an underrated bass player in a genre-defining band is all it's cracked up to be, but more importantly, we chat a lot about the brand new HWM album, "Feel The Void." It's out March 18th on Equal Vision Records, and not only does it mark the first time the band reunited with producer Brian McTernan, it also marks the band's first full-length with Chris Cresswell in the mix as a permanent member...even taking lead vocal duties on a song! We also talk a lot about how the band came together to write the album - no easy task given that they collaborated from their home bases in Florida (Wollard, Black and Rebelo), California (Ragan), Maryland (McTernan) and now Ontario (Cresswell). Hurray for Zoom!
This week, after a little 1984 R.E.M. refrain: brand new Belle & Sebastian, Pointed Sticks, Ex-Vöid, Wet Leg, Tracy Shedd, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and Elvis Costello & the Imposters, plus Gladys Knight & the Pips, Link Wray, Junior Murvin, The Strangers, Ray Price, McGuinn, Clark & Hillman, and Groucho Marx; and R.I.P. It became apparent a couple of weeks ago that this month’s new release series would have to be a two part extravaganza. Not only were the quantity of new songs piling up, but there were also quite a few albums that deserved more than a track or two of airtime.
So the decision was easy, but then how does one split the shows? There’s no real formua to what was aired tonight and what will be held back until next week. Tonight’s show probably features more of the types of artists who are easily found on Bandcamp, which is fitting since March 4 was another of the great bandcamp days where the artist gets 100% of the proceeds of their sales. But otherwise the quality between both sets of tunes is pretty similar, as you’ll see during next week’s second part.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. It's March 1st, so that means it's officially the kickoff to Women's History Month. As such, we've teamed up with our friends at Mable Syndrome for a pretty fun feature. If you check out our Instagram pages (@mable.syndrome and @dyingscene obviously), we'll be posting every single day of March a picture of a women band/ artist/ musician and featuring the woman who took the picture. We have many amazing and talented women in the punk rock scene and we are excited to give them an entire month to shine! For Episode 54 of (*both laugh*), we caught up with Mable Syndrome co-founder Kristen to talk about building their site - and their community - from the ground up over the last half-decade. Yours truly has guested on the Mable Syndrom podcast twice, so returning the favor was probably long overdue! Thanks Kristen!

This week’s show was originally going to be another in the series of “odds and ends” episodes where I air tracks from some record I’ve either recently acquired or pulled out of the archives to give a listen. Unfortunately, the deaths of two great rockers changed those plans.
Mark Lanegan is in my opinion the most artistic of all of the grunge-era lead vocalists. While the vast majority of his brethren rarely travelled out of their safe zone, Lanegan was a musical shape shifter throughout his entire career. There was simply not a genre he wouldn’t attempt, nor did it seem like he ever said no to a collaborator. The first half of the show consists of long sets devoted to his solo career and also a taste of those collaborations.
Then just a couple of hours before showtime came the news that Downliners Scet leader Don Craine had also passed away. Never heard of the Sect? You’re loss. Please go do some research after listening to tonight’s show. The set dedicated to him not only includes some of the great tracks of their mid-60s glory years but also a couple of great collaborations with Billy Childish.
Filling up the rest of the show are some of the tunes originally slated for tonight’s show, including a number of tracks from a fabulous collection of 60s garage rock. Did you know that Jerry Mathers of Leave It To Beaver was in a band? You do now!

This week, after a 1982 antiwar Damned refrain: brand new Stars, Kurt Vile, Elvis Costello & the Imposters, M. Ward, Fontaines D.C., Astrid Williamson, and Billy Bragg, plus Pretty Things, Bobby Bare (Sr.), Temptations, Merry Go-Round, Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, and Cab Calloway; and R.I.P. The Sadies' Dallas Good (1974-2022)
Well, I guess this is growing up. On Marmite and Boudica and Red Dwarf and The Van Pelt and the best punk rock album of the year.
Earlier this month, Frank Turner released his ninth studio album. Entitled FTHC, it is by far his most "punk rock" album to date (I suppose one could argue that his previous album, 2019's No Man's Land, which was primarily a historical folk album with each song telling a different tale about a woman from history, ranging from Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Christa McAuliffe, was his most "punk rock" album to date for entirely different reasons, but that's more of a semantic argument than we need right now). FTHC is his most personal album to date - no easy feat for someone who's made a career of wearing his tape deck heart on his sleeve. It may indeed be his best album to date. It is, most certainly and perhaps not surprisingly given the above factors, his first album to debut at #1 on the charts in his native UK.
We caught up with Turner the day after learning that FTHC was, in fact, named the number one selling album in the land. We talked about the importance of that distinction, particularly as it came fifteen years and nine albums into his solo career. We talked about the influences behind the album and about how getting married and turning 40 and still being alive has provided a different sort of perspective that wasn't afforded to his younger self. We talked about the making of the album (the image of Ilan Rubin recording drums in a Los Angeles studio over Zoom while Frank watched from London and producer Rich Costey watched from Vermont is still one I find endlessly amusing). We talked about the stories behind some of the album's more personal tracks, although I did leave out the songs about his struggles with anxiety and cocaine addiction and how his relationship with his father changed after the latter came out as a trans woman several years ago; those have been covered at length in other outlets. And perhaps most importantly, we talked about the legion of Turner fans, aptly known as the Frank Turner Army, that has been steadily building for the better part of the last decade and who, frankly, rightly share in a lot of the success behind FTHC. They even pitched in for a few questions that certainly ran a stylistic gamut.
This week, after a 1982 antiwar Damned refrain: brand new Stars, Kurt Vile, Elvis Costello & the Imposters, M. Ward, Fontaines D.C., Astrid Williamson, and Billy Bragg, plus Pretty Things, Bobby Bare (Sr.), Temptations, Merry Go-Round, Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, and Cab Calloway; and R.I.P. The Sadies' Dallas Good (1974-2022)
“No Elvis, Beatles, or Rolling Stones!”
Sure, it was a pose. The Clash may have sung those lyrics, but they were actually true students in the history of rock and roll. But the British punk scene of 1977 was certainly a time when the walls were pushed over and new blood took over the music scene. Maybe the lyrics should have been “No Floyd, Yes, or ELP!”
So tonight’s celebration includes a ton of artists that proved themselves to be legendary, along with many other bands that had long careers. And there’s also quite a few acts that crashed and burned, leaving behind a fabulous two or three minute piece of dynamite!
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. When it comes to food, seems like nothing is as Punk as a pizza. When it comes to Pizza, nothings seems more controversial for TJ like Pineapples as a topping. That´s reason enough to dig even deeper into the topic and consult Branden Powers, creator of Evel Pie, the RnR pizza mecca in Las Vegas who tries to explain the magic of Pizza and Punk and how to merge them into a most favorable concept.

New stuff from Suzi Moon, Tramp, The Prostitutes, Sweat, Klaxo, Illegal Leather, The Gaggers, the Roxies, School Damage, Chubby and the Gangs and more!
If you've read any of the press that came out surrounding LA hardcore band Sweat's debut LP, "Gotta Give It Up," you've probably noticed that the common theme throughout is that Sweat aren't a typical hardcore band. They've got a sound and a style and a swagger that are unique; hardcore, for sure, but with riffs and rhythms that range from thrashy to chunky to 70s rock (think Think Lizzy). At the center of the activity is the firebrand that is Tuna Tardugno. It's abrasive and confrontational and a whole lot of fun.
We caught up for a super fun conversation with Tuna about the band's history (they've only got nine gigs under their collective championship belts, a byproduct of the band's formation less than a year prior to the world shutting down) and recording with Grammy-nominated producer Jack Shirley and their upcoming plans (tour? new album?). We also talked a lot about Tuna's introduction to the world of punk and hardcore in upstate New York and the parallels between the DIY punk and wrestling communities, both of which are near and dear to Tuna's heart. Oh, did we mention Tuna's a wrestler as well? Admittedly, my knowledge of modern wrestling is actually more limited than my knowledge of hardcore, which is pretty effing limited in its own right. Still, I am from the same hometown as Paul "Triple H" Levesque, so maybe I can hold my own a little.
Anyway, this was a super fun conversation. Hope you dig it.

Valentine’s Day is the one “holiday” this is not rock and roll friendly.
Seriously, it just doesn’t work. Rock and roll isn’t about love. It’s about primal feelings. It’s about lust. It’s about vitrol. It’s about lost love; not current love.
Obviously, almost every rock and roll band has had their share of love songs. They’re called ballads, and some of them are not only very lovely but can be classics. But they’re not rock and roll songs.
Tonight’s show may consist primarily of songs with the word “love” in them, but there are no love songs here. Every track fits the various concerns I listed above. Think of this as the anti-Valentine’s Day show.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows.
