Just like almost every episode, the annual Halloween edition of The Ledge would never exist without the friends of the show who provide us with fresh material every year. In the weeks leading up to the ultimate rock and roll holiday, bands and/or labels send us all kinds of material perfect for this ghoulish show.
This year is no exception, and thanks must go to Big Stir Records, The Ex-Bombers, Red on Red Records, Mr. Fang and the Dark Tones, The Cutthroat Brothers, and quite a few others for sharing with us a large percentage of the material you hear tonight. Along wtih those donations are a ton of relatively new music that fits the format. It’s the perfect Halloween soundtrack!
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion!
Dave Coop starts things off with a bloody playlist with brand spanking new tracks by The Slackers, Dogs In The Fight and Broken Cuffs! The WITCHING HOUR with your host LA BRUJA, This week Bruja brings you all things spooky with Christian Death, Johnny Thunders, UK Subs, Rezurex, Mass Arrest, Ill Repute, Mad Sin, Dwarves, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and The Freeze! October 27th, 2021. Tommy Unit LIVE!! #515. The Count is back from from Greenwood Cemetery with another killer Halloween Spooktacular! Turn it up! We’re LIVE, Wednesday nights, 10:00pm ET/7:00pm PT on REAL PUNK RADIO – Radio Done Right!
This week, after a refrain of 1970 Neil Young: a guest DJ slot by Jeff Kelson, plus brand new Don McGlashan, Real Estate, Parquet Courts, La Luz, Tombstones in Their Eyes, Downstrokes, and Descendents, plus The Beatles, Buckinghams, George Jones, Barry McGuire, Bunny Wailer, Shocking Blue, Screaming Jay Hawkins, etc.
I’m sure that all Ledge fans could have predicted this week’s episode. With today’s release of the 40th anniversary deluxe edition of the very first Replacements album, Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash, it was pretty obvious that there would be a deep dive into this box set.
The great news is that this box does not disappoint. Besides a desperately needed remaster of the orginal album, this 4 CD/1 LP set includes 67 previously unreleased tracks. There’s home demos, basement recordings, studio outtakes, and the band’s earliest professionally recorded show. How could I not make this the main reason of the show?
But there’s much more. With this being reissue and box set season, I go through a number of other similar releases. Yet I also have some harsh words for a couple of them. There’s also an opportunity for listeners to compare two versions of the same Heartbreakers song. Is the newly discovered “master” of L.A.M.F.’s “Born to Lose” actually better than the “restored” version from the 2012 remix? Let me know what you think.

This week, after some once-unreleased 1968 Beatles: plus brand new Boo Radleys, Sunflower Bean, Laetitia Sadier, Muun Bato, Bart & Friends, Fotoform, and Shebangs, plus The Beatles, Marvin Gaye (with Martha & the Vandellas), Bee Gees, John Hartford, Missing Links, Uniques, Boris Karloff & Vincent Price (and Red Skelton), etc.
With today’s release of the Velvet Underground documentary on AppleTV it was pretty obvious what tonight’s Ledge was going to be. I just never relaized how easy it would be to comile a show consisting of nothing but Velvet Underground covers.
I knew I had quite a few of these types of tracks, but I was shocked at just how many were in my collection. Besides the various one-off covers on quite a few records by the likes of the Beat Farmers, Wreckless Eric, and The Soft Boys, I also had quite a number of indie tribute records. I even had four records that completely covered the entire Velvet Underground and Nico album, including the brand new “I’ll Be Your Mirror” tribute.
First record party. I'm back at it in the basement spinning up a couple hours of the good stuff. It's going to take a couple episodes to polish off the rough edges but starting it off right.
Git it.

As announced last week, this week’s episode is a carry over of the previous episode’s new release format. Not that these are second rate to those aired last week. Nope, that’s not how it works on The Ledge. You had two hours of tracks that worked well together last week, and now this week is another two of the same excellent quality.
Yes, there are more great tunes from the Rum Bar Records’ Rocktober II sampler, but there are also fine new releases from veteran acts such as The Bevis Frond, Divine Horseman, Mountain Movers and many more, along with newer acts like Mom and Bitch Queens.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. It’s almost a given that if Rum Bar Records puts out a sampler, that month’s Ledge “New Release” show will be a two parter, and this month is no exception. Thanks to “Rocktober II”, the massive 38 track collection of new releases, old faves, and other fun selections, there just isn’t enough time to go through all the goodies.

The idea for this show actually came about earlier this summer when I noticed that over the last few months I had acquired a number of songs about various movie stars. Over the next few days, with the help of a bunch of Facebook friends, I put together more than enough tracks that fit this theme. Tonight’s supersized show is the results of hours and hours of research, and consists of songs about not only classic Hollywood royalty such as Myrna Loy, Joan Crawford, Robert Mitchum, and Clark Gable but relatively recent stars like Keira Knightley, Winona Ryder, Timothy Chalamet, and Emma Stone. It’s a show that jumps from acoustic-based singer/songwriters to classic rockers to some outrageous punk rock.
BTW, it should also be noted that the intro voice of the Ledge, Max, is now a high school student who has an opportunity to spend a few days in New York City with his school’s performing arts department. Please consider helping him out by donating at his Gofundme page. (https://www.gofundme.com/f/maxwell-to-nyc)

It´s commonly known that when is comes to kissing, French people have set the standard ever since Adam met Eve in some garden in Paris. Well, here comes Dr. Justice from TJ Saboteur, who not only lays down the law as far as French Kissing within the TJ goes, but also explains why Hellfest is one of the hottest festivals for our typa music. Alors: allez a la guillotine!

After taking a week off (for various reasons that I discuss at the beginning of the show), The Ledge is back with another show of various odds and ends. There are sets influenced by some packages I received from Indonesian Junk and Lucinda Williams. There’s some memories of that great Replacements show in St. Paul six years ago with a few tunes from a show recorded earlier on that tour. There’s an oddly great tribute album to Elvis Costello that couples Latin singers with the original backing tracks of the legendary This Year’s Model album. And there’s also quite a few songs initially meant to be in the last new release show, but had to be cut for time constraints. Plus quite a few other great tunes in a variety of formats.

This week, after some 1957 Little Richard warbling, Everlys style: a tribute to Don Everly (1937-2021)–plus Charlie Watts (1941-2021), Tom T Hall (1936-2021) and Rod Gilbert (1941-2021)–alongside brand new Successful Failures, Jorge Elbrecht, Lauds, Spires, Film School, Furious Seasons, and Jack Skuller, plus The, Beatles, Pioneers, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Davy Graham, Jimmie Rodgers, etc.
The death of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts earlier this week created an obvious opportunity for The Ledge to celebrate his almost 60 years of playing behind fellow Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
But, of course, I didn’t go the obvious route. You don’t get two hours of the band’s greatest hits. You don’t even get the most well known covers of the band. No, instead this tribute consists primarily of bands that fit the true spirit of the “Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World”. The tracks consist of a ton of live encores of Americana artists, garage rock versions recorded for various tribute albums, and a handful of B-sides and other bonus material. Oh yes, and a drunken cover or three found on Replacements’ bootlegs.
Rest in peace, Charlie. You will be missed.
Mikki Sixx from Turbojugend Salzburg joins TJR to discuss the recent comeback of popularity of Turbonegro´s fantasstic 2007 album RETOX. Tschebesta and Mikki go through all the songs and mix it up with their personal TJ experiences in order to serve the audience a very well reflected COCKtail based upon profound personal and music historical ingredients.

The “odds and ends” format seems to have worked the last few times I’ve done it, so why not do another show of this type? For those new to The Ledge, the show consists of material I’ve been listening to in my home over the last few days. Some selections are faves from a few years ago that I haen’t pulled out in a while (Sarah Shook, Lydia Loveless). Others are recent purchases that don’t quite fit the new release shows (live Bob Mould, Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows). Add to that my recent fascination over everything involving Ncio, thanks to the new book, You Are Beautiful and You Are Alone by Jennifer Otter Bickerdike, and you get a handful of tracks featuring her beautiful, haunted vocals.
Of course, news of a new box set including previously unreleased tracks by The Replacements takes priority over everything. This October, a 40th anniversary reissue of their first album, Sorry Ma Forgot to Take Out the Trash will hit the stores, and features 100 tracks, 67 of them previously unreleased. Expect to hear a lot from this in the next few months!
Franz Nicolay has had a long and winding and frankly vaudevillian journey through the music industry over the two-plus decades since he left our shared home state of New Hampshire. Dying Scene readers from the days of yore no doubt are familiar with the #1 accordion player in punk rock (it's true, Connor checked: https://dyingscene.com/heroes-of-the-punk-accordion-a-tribute-to-squeezebox-rockers/) through solo work or his stints in The Hold Steady and The World/Inferno Friendship Society and Against Me! and perhaps Anti-Social Music and maybe Guignol and probably from collaborations with countless beloved acts like Jeff Rosenstock and The Loved Ones and Frank Turner and Junior Battles and more.
A few years ago, he published a fascinating nonfiction book, "The Humourless Laties of Border Control: Touring The Punk Underground from Belgrade to Ulaanbaatar." It's an incredibly detailed and dense look at DIY touring through large chucks of the former Soviet Union and Mongolia and the like. At long last, Nicolay is set to release his debut novel. It's called "Someone Should Pay For Your Pain," and it's finally due out next week (August 24th) through Gibson Press, and let me tell you: it's wonderful. It centers around a character named Rudy Pauver.
Originally from Wisconsin, Pauver finds his way to the DIY punk mecca that was late 90s Gainesville and joins a band and, when they goes belly up for a variety of reasons, he continues to ply his wares as a solo artist/troubadour for the better part of the next two decades. There is a cast of characters that includes former bandmates and former proteges-turned-megastars and crotchedy bartenders and condescending soundguys and a next-generation punk rock niece. If you've been in a band or been even loosely tied to a scene, you know these people and these places and these roads and these dive bar floor tiles and these mattresses in the corner at the local flophouse. It's real and it's relatable and it's a sort of book about what happens after the "coming of age" stuff gets old.
For a musician who dabbles in writing - Franz can craft a hell of a novel.
This week, after a slice of recent TV Smith: brand new Split Single, Shivas, Descendents, Tremolo Beer Gut, Cold Beat, Tambourina, Lou Barlow, and Furious Seasons plus The Ventures, Pretty Things, Derrick Morgan & the Aggrovators, Hank Williams Sr., Jan & Dean, Tony Bennett, etc.
Part two of this month’s new release series carries on from the excellence of last week’s first show. There are great tribute records to John Prine and The Ramones, along with some other fabulous covers of the Flamin’ Groovies, T. Rex, The Beatles, and The Blasters. There’s the returns of the Descendents and Pearl Harbour. There’s also new bands (at least to me) such as Vacation, The Umbrellas, Liquid, and a few others. And to top things off are some more tracks from the brand new FREE “XOXOXO Volume One ‘the nice price'” compilation.
I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. Suzi Moon has been an active member of the punk rock scene for well more than half her life, so you might expect that she would have used the free time provided by unplanned COVID-related shutdowns over the last 18 months to pause and catch her breath. You'd be sorely mistaken, however. After years of playing in a band with her sister (Civet, obviously) and taking filmmaking classes and starting a new band, Turbulent Hearts, and playing bass in a new band that flamed out rather unceremoniously last year (L.A. Machina), Moon stepped out on her own for real. She put out an EP, "Call The Shots," earlier this year under her own name with the help of Pirates PRess Records. She self-produced and directed music videos for each of the three songs on "Call The Shots." She's also got another ten songs already recorded for a full-length, and is going back in to the studio in the coming days to record another brand new EP. She's got a full backing band of fellow scene vets (Drew Champion and Sean Peterson of The Split Second on guitar and drums respectively, Patti Bo from River City Rebels on bass) that are slated to play their first shows, including Camp Punksylvania, in a couple of weeks - delta variant be damed. We caught up with Moon to talk about all of that and more. Stay tuned for updates on new material and new videos soon!

This is another of thsoe months where the new release episode is so easy to compile that it just has to be split into two seperate shows. So tonight is part one, and what is especially gratifying is that so much of the broadcast consists of “friends” of the show.
Yes, there’s the usual contributions from our friends at Rum Bar Records, Red On Red Records, and Big Stir Records. But there’s also newer friends such as Old Town Crier and Dan Israel, who emailed new tunes to check out. And then there’s The Ex-Bombers, the fabulous “psychedelic jazz noir blues explosion” due that I recently discovered on Instagram. After an exchange of DM’s, they actually sent me a vinyl version of their fabulous new “New Love Is Easy” album.
Besides those picks, there’s brand new tunes by longtime Ledge favorites Son Volt, CTMF, Ty Segall, Wavves, and so many otheres. There are new discoveries such as The Pokes, Cosmic Psychos, and The Bug Club. Plus, there are a handful of tracks from Rum Bar’s brand new “XOXOXO Volume One ‘the nice price'” compilation.

Although I have a montly new release episode, I don’t really have a place for new reissues, compilations, live albums, and other odd releases such as that. Once in a while, I do throw a reissued track or two in the new release show, but for the most part it’s hard to find a spot for them in my usual themed shows.
So tonight those types of releases get their own theme. I can’t say it’s all archival material, though, as there are new recordings by the likes of Los Lobos, The Descendents, and The Beat-Hells. But for the most part, tonight’s show comes from the type of releases I mentioned before. There’s archival collections of bands such as The Outsiders, R. Stevie Moore, and David Bowie. There are rare tracks from reissues of classics by George Harrison, Mudhoney, The White Stripes, and many others. And there’s quite a few great cover tunes.

If you've watched previous episodes of (*both laugh*) or if you've heard me guest on other podcasts or if you know me personally, you know that Pearl Jam has been a huge part of my musical journey. "Ten," which turns thirty years old this time next month, struck at exactly the right time in my formative years. The shockwave is still being felt, to say the least. Pearl Jam were very honestly the band that really ushered in my love of punk rock, in part through their very public love of bands like Dead Kennedys and Bad Religion and Social D and Dead Boys and obviously The Clash and Ramones. As I one-time aspiring bass player, it was Jeff Ament whose style got me to buy my first bass when I was a teenager (an Alvarez Dana bass, if you're interested).
I've not only followed Pearl Jam far and wide over the last three decades, but I've followed Jeff's solo career and side projects (Three Fish, Tres Mts., RNDM, etc) along the way. His songs are always intricate and textured and unique and pull from a variety of influences. Next month, Ament will release a new solo full length. Entitled "I Should Be Outside," it was written and recorded entirely during COVID-related quarantine. But it's also not the only material he's put out during this time, as it follows last year's blistering "American Death Squad" EP and a new project called Deaf Charlie that features Fitz and the Tantrums' John Wicks on drums.
This was immensely entertaining and meaningful for me, and I hope that came across. I was lucky enough to meet Jeff once in passing at an RNDM show on a snowy November night in Boston (there's a picture of that meeting in the intro and over my right shoulder during our chat here) and I thought that was one of the coolest things that had ever happened to me that didn't involve marriage or the birth of my kid. This was cooler. Thanks Jeff. And yes, don't worry Pearl Jam fans...we talked a lot about PJ and songwriting history and all the "how the sausage is made" stuff!
This week, after a snatch of 1966 Rolling Stones: brand new Piroshka, La Luz, U-Roy, Billy Bragg, Shirley Collins, Descendents, Steve Gunn, and Low plus Kinks, Glen Campbell, Beatles, Solomon Burke, Neil Innes, Kitty Wells, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.
