A Crisp Clear October afternoon out here on the left coast -perfect for Pumpkin hunting and Cider drinking. Just got back from the Pumpkin Patch with a mess of pumpkins - a few for carving and a few for decoration. Time to crack open another seasonal treasure - a cider from the Mendocino Valley in Northern California.
Now, Mendocino is famous for it's wine, but with the Anderson Valley Brewing company and now the Boonville Cider House, it's domination is in a run for the money. This cider pours a very clear pale yellow with light carbonation. The flavor is crisp, clean and dry - a very nice combination and this one is true to it's name - a bit of a bite from the astringency of the finish. Highly recommended! This was found in the wild as a 4 pack of 16 ounce cans, The Facebook page for the Cider house shows some newly bottled 22 ounce bottles along with a new variety - Currant Apple Cider - hmm that sounds delicious.

Greetings on this breezy and warm October afternoon. Being that it is indeed October, it is time for a German style beer and no better brewery to brew this than one of my favorite from the Pacific Northwest. Ninkasi brews lagers all year long, with their Pravda, Lux and Venn offerings at different intervals. These are all part of the "Prismatic" series of lagers.
The Venn has a wonderful 2 finger bright white head and a gleamingly clear very light golden color. The taste is of Saltines, with a wonderful bready goodness that this style really brings forward. Just a bit of hop bitterness that translates to lemon and grass. A clean and light finish - yes this one is a keeper.

Celebrating 5 years of the blog and the show tonight with an old favorite of mine - Boeger's Hangtown Red.
This is from Lot #49 - fitting as this wine is produced in the wild west town of Placerville, CA where many a 49er called home.
This blend is also fitting as it is made from 5 different varietals - Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel - each adding to the wonderful mix that is the Hangtown Red. Swirling the glass around, the first flavor notes that hit the nose are a Cabernet "perfume" and then a bit of dark red fruit tones. On the tongue, more of the fruit - plum and raspberry- and some nice vanilla and leather earthiness. This one has a wonderfully smooth finish with just a hint of astringency on the tongue, should go quite well with the Hanger Steak I have marinating in the fridge and soon to be grilling. Also, the wine is quite a bargain at just about $7 down at my local Trader Joes.

I've got some Wine open this afternoon. No, not the red variety, the brewed variety. A Barley Wine from the Evil Twin Brewing company. This one is called Freudian Slip, a perfect accompaniment to the show this week centered on Words.
This one is a dark amber with some great odors wafting off the one finger head. Molasses, Caramel and some sweet butterscotch is lingering above the foam. Sipping the beer reveals a complexity that puts a smile on my face. Cashews, Chocolate and something I can't put my finger on - maybe some plum? Deep and rich this one is, with a very subdued hop bite. The only drawback I can see is the heat of the 10.3% alcohol. If you can get past that, you will find a very nicely constructed Barley Wine. This one is for sipping and letting it get up to room temperature - to let the aromas escape. Allright - I've had a few sips - now back to my Bank Shot. Hey - I got the Wow's lit for extra balls!

New Belgium Tour De Fall Pale Ale
Still Cooking out here on the Left Coast, 100 degrees in the shade, as they say. Not really ready for a Fall beer yet, but decided to take the plunge with the Autumn offering from the New Belgium folks. This a Pale Ale. Wait - I know you are thinking, like I was, a PALE ALE for Fall? Not a Punkin or Oktoberfeast? Those new Belgium lads know how to mix it up. They are from Colorado, which recently changed some laws......
Not sure what they were roasting when they thought up this one, besides the Caramel, Chocolate Rye and Pale malts that went into the blend. This one is malt forward and I'm liking that. No Hop Bomb here! There is a bit of a bite from the dry hopped Amarillo and Cascade hops, but the IBU count is just at 38, which pales in comparison to the some of the other Pale Ales out there (Dales @65 and Zombie Dust @ 60), but lines up with THE Amercian style Pale Ale (Sierra Nevada's 37 IBU). With the malt forward style this one is a bit of a hybrid of the American and British style Pale Ale. Quite an experiment, but this one is just not working any magic for me. Highly drinkable and well made, a nice example of a Craft Beer is what this is. Love the label though.

Common Cider Company Hibiscus Saison
A hot afternoon out here on the Left Coast, perfect for a cool refreshing Cider. This one is from the Common Cider Company of Auburn, California. On the label they call it Drytown. Really - a cider made in Drytown -- interesting.....
This cider pours a wonderful golden red color with the type of carbonation you see in a champagne - a small head that rapidly dissipates. A nice stream of bubbles rise from the bottom of the glass as you work your way through the glass. I've used a Champagne flute for the cider as ciders should be served in either a flute or a pilsner glass, but I thought the flute would show off the color of this Hibiscus Saison Cider well. Hibiscus - let's see that is a tropical flower that lends a sweet smell and a bit of red color to the cider. The Saison element is mostly non-existent as you don't get the typical funky flavors that you get in a Saison beer. This one is a thirst quencher, but not as complex as I imagined. One thing I do like - a low alcohol content (6.5%) that makes is easy to work your way through the 22 ounces.

Holey Moley Batman, it is a hot one here on the left coast. 100 degrees in the shade, as the saying goes. I've retreated to the cool, dark confines of the Pinhead Studios to play some pinball, listen to some tunes and have a nice refreshing brew.
I've chosen a six pack of Anchor California Lager for the refreshment and this one is really nice. Not a hop bomb, not even close. Just a crisp and smooth lager that has a bit of some hop backbone. This one is new to the lineup over at the historic Anchor Brewing site in San Francisco. Added last year to the Anchor lineup, this one celebrates the first California Lager brewed up back in 1876 by the Boca Brewing company up in Truckee (where there was the ice needed for lagering). Check the story link below. If you are in the mood for a light refreshing summer beer that won't overpower you (4.9% alcohol - yes a "session beer") then I would highly recommend it.

2011 Tuella Douro Redux
Uncorked a Portuguese Red this afternoon. I had tried this one back in October of last year, but found a bad cork. Imagine my happiness when I popped the cork on this one, sniffed it and just a wonderful aroma of blackberries and plums emerged. I'm happy to say that this bottle was fine and thanks go out to Dick and Lino for suggesting that I give this wine another try.
This wine reminds me a bit of a old vine Zinfandel, which is a great thing. Red fruits out front, but a nice deeply seated earthiness and spice that you are left with in the smooth finish. So glad I tried another bottle.
The Douro region of Portugal is centered on the Douro River, in the northeastern corner of Portugal. This region produces most of the grapes used in Port, but there are many grapes that are vinified into non-fortified wines, including this one. Terraced vineyards along the Douro River - yes - someday I will make it to Portugal.

Knee Deep Brewing Midnight Hoppyness
A fine Sunday afternoon at the Pinhead Compound and I've got an Imperial Double Black Ale to try from the kind folks at Knee Deep Brewing. This one is called Midnight Hoppyness and I purchased this one a few weeks ago in anticipation of the Midnight theme for this weeks show. I've heard great things about the brewery located in Auburn, CA and couldn't wait to try it. I was a bit startled when I opened the bottle as I heard no gas escape. Hmmm - not good. Poured it into the glass and not even a hint of a head. I think this one was capped poorly and the CO2 escaped - I bet some oxidation occurred as well. The first taste was pretty nasty and the rest went down the drain. Too bad - but hey - I'll try another Knee Deep at some point. Good thing I had a few Sierra Nevada Torpedos handy - now that's a beer that never lets me down.

Red Red Wine On A Sunday #237 – Till We’re Nude

2011 Berryessa Gap Zinfandel
Time for a Red this Lazy Sunday and what a Red it is! Now, I've blathered on and on about the Berryessa Gap Zinfandel (see the past vintage's posts - 2006, 2008, 2009) and the winery keeps on delivering with the 2011 vintage. Tons of red fruit on the nose and on the tongue and a subtle bit of something else - is it meringue, fudge, vanilla or caramel? - some type of sweetness beyond the fruit that I can't put my finger on.
This should go great with the Pork Chops that will be sizzling on the grill in a few hours. Gonna add some halved Red Plums to the grill when the chops are almost done that will pair well with the Pork. Have you tried grilled stone fruits with Pork before? Peaches and Plums work the best - just cut them in half and get rid of the stone. Smear on some Plum or Peach preserves and place them cut side down on the grill in a cooler area. Let them caramelize on the grill side and let the meat of the fruit juice up. It should end up being a bit of a paste that you can spread over the Pork or just eat it as side accompanying the Pork. Highly Recommended as is this Zin, which should go well with both the Pork and the Plums.
