It's a fine Sunday afternoon out here on the west coast. I've popped the top on a 16 oz brew from the Mavericks Brewing Company outta Half Moon Bay, CA. The brewery is named for Mavericks, a surfing spot just down the road from the Brewery. The Tunnel in Tunnel Vision is meant to refer to the tunnel of a big wave.
The beer - well it pours a nice golden copper with lotsa hop haze. Smells dank as hell and a pine piney with a wiff of grapefruit as well. The taste - well definitely hop-forward with with a nice bite of an aftertaste. This one clocks in at 100 IBU and 6.7% alcohol, so not for the faint of heart. I'll be going back for more of this one!

Loving the Labor Day holiday weekend. Prepping a deep dish Chicago Style Pizza and picked out one of my favorite wines to go with it, a Sobon Estates Zinfandel.
The Sobon Estates Winery produces a number of Zinfandels - an Old Vine, a Rocky Top and the Cougar Hill, which I have the 2012 vintage opened. Each is a bit different, with the Old Vine having the great jammy goodness that the age of the vines brings, the Rocky Top with a bit more dry minerality. The Cougar Hill has a much more fruit forward character - bright tones of blackberry and plum, with a light body. Should go well with the red sauce and the yeast of the dough.
If you love Zinfandels and have the opportunity to purchase any of the Sobon Zinfandels, I'd recommend you do,

It's a fine Sunday out here on the Left Coast. The daughters are back in school, football is in the preseason and it's time for some Cider. Not just your run of the mill cider, this one has Habanero chilis! Fermented by the Finn River Farm and Cidery, it is in the farm's Craft Ciders line.
The label states that "this is a a spicy sparkling cider with a balance of sweet apple and hot pepper." Balanced - not at all. All hot and spicy. The aroma closes the throat and the chilis make this cider just a vehicle for the Habanero, with no discerable cider flavor. I'll be sipping the rest of this one.

It's a Red Wine Sunday tonight and I have opened up a 2013 Murphy- Goode California Pinot Noir. Produced up in Healdsburg, California this wine blends grapes from the central coast region.
The aroma - a bit of smoke and vanilla. On the tongue - Black Cherries predominate with some other great fruit forward flavours. Light and smooth - perfect for the summer temps we have been seeing out here on the left coast.
I tried the 2008 Pinot from the winery a few years ago and loved it as well as a Red Blend that the winery produced just last year, so I am not surprised that this vintage is superb.
Gotta love the back label as it states "Like a new cover of your favorite song, our Pinot noir is unexpected, mysterious and wonderfully familiar." Wow - great description.
This should go great with the Salmon that will be grilled later and the Mango Salsa that will top the Salmon.

Greeting on this fine Sunday afternoon. Another week where my Sunday plans will leave me out of the house and away from the vinyl. Alas, a good dinner will be had at the in-laws tonight, so don't worry about me too much. Plus, hey - I bring the wine, so I'm good. No wineing until later today, so it's back to some Mosaic goodness at Noon. Apparently, I am not the only one who loves the hop, as beers emblazoned with MOSAIC are appearing everywhere, including a local West Sacramento brewery called Bike Dog.
The beer pours a very pale straw-gold color (hey - it's a pale ale) and has a nice white head. The smell, well - it's damn good!. For some reason, beyond the normal dankness and fruitiness of the Mosaic aroma (that you can smell half the room away...) I'm getting a distinct Orange smell - like someone just put their thumb into the peel and started pulling. I kinda like that. The taste - hmmm - not as good as the Karl Strauss, but it is different. Subtle this beer is. Lighter than the Strauss, and with less of a malt forwardness, this one puts the Mosaic front and center. A bit out of balance for me but, hey , I'm gonna finish it. Well done Bike Dog!

Greetings on this wonderful Saturday. Posting a day early as the family unit will be heading to San Francisco for the day tomorrow. More on that in a bit, First the wine.
This is an old vine Zinfandel from the Lodi region of California, to the south and east of Napa Valley. Zinfandel has long been grown in the region for many decades as the heat of the day ripens the vines perfectly. Much of the Zinfandel was diverted to the "White" Zinfandel as that became popular, so it is nice to see some old vines from the region vinified into a traditional "Red" Zinfandel.
Brazin Zinfandel is produced by the Delicato Family vineyards and the name is indicative of the bold flavors of the wine. On the nose, I get some classic Zin character (vanilla, leather, plum and blackberry). On the tongue, more of the same with a cloying herbal note that is a bit strange for Zin.
Hmm - this is not a drain-pour, as it is fine, but I won't be going back for more. Maybe it is past it's prime as it is a 2012 vintage and I like my Zins rather young. More info below - glad to find a wine site called Would Bukowski Drink It? - great name!

It's A Fresh Squeezed Sunday. Started the day off with some fresh squeezed grapefruit juice using fruit from our tree and am keeping the Freshness going with an IPA from Deschutes Brewing in Bend, Oregon.
This IPA uses Citra, Nugget and Mosaic Hops along with a malt build of Pale, Crystal and Munich varieties. Ah - I love me some Mosaic Hops. The beer pours a deep golden shade of copper with a nice white head and smells wonderful - citrus, pine, bread - yes very nice. On the tongue, the mosaic hops do not predominate, as in one of my current favorite beers, the Karl Strauss Mosaic Ale, but add to a fine complexity. This beer is a bit higher in alcohol as well with a nice complex backbone of malty goodness. Loved the Foray Belgian IPA from the brewery I tried a few months ago and this one is even better. Salute Deschutes!
I'll be heading up to Washington State later in August and will be going right through Bend, Oregon where the brewery is located. I'll have to plan a lunch time visit!

Another Sunday, another Red Blend! This one is from the Pays D'Oc in Southern France. Langudoc-Roussillon to be specific - the land of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. That is what comprises this wine - 45% G, 40% S and 15 % M.
Found this blend called Pontificis down at my local Trader Joe's with a sign in front of the bin saying that this one was a "Crew Favorite", meaning that the work crew at the store has blessed this one. Hey, it was only $6.99, so what could I loose?
Wow - this blend is really nice. Complex - with wonderful fruit notes and earthy spice to complement them. Plum, Raspbery, Coffee, Oak, Vanilla - wonderful - I'll be going back for more.

Greetings on this breezy and warm Sunday afternoon. I've got the BBQ warmed up and a brined chicken is rotating away on the rotisserie. Opened up one of my new GoTo beers - Karl Strauss' Mosaic Session Ale.
This beer clocks in at 5.5% ABV (wait - doesn't a session ale need to be below 5%? - no matter). It pours a light amber color - sort of a pilsner shade of yellow - and has a nice 2 finger white head. The aromas from the beer are filling the room. Let's see - Pineapple, Grapefruit, a bit of Pine and a strong note of the Ganga. Nice! The taste is wonderful - light with a bit of hop bite, but mostly hop aromas. Nice crisp finish with an abundance of carbonation. Smooth as hell and highly recommended!
The Karl Strauss Brewery has been crafting beers in San Diego for 27 years and were one of the first "micro-brews" in the area. Now, I have tried some of their beers, namely the Red Trolley Ale, and they are great, but this Mosaic Session Ale just hits it right out of the park! Yes, I admit it, I love the Mosaic Hop and, hey, if you don't, you probably won't like this one. But if you do, or if you like a great smooth easy drinking Ale, you need to try this one out.

Greetings on this warm Sunday afternoon. I'm inside beating the heat and having a glass of red - in particular a glass of Black Ink. Love the packaging on this one. Wonderful font used on the "Black Ink" label and a great squid on the top of the capsule.
Too bad the wine is overly sweet. Not much oak or tannin in this blend. Great fruitiness, but no backbone to go with it. With a name like Black Ink, I expected a nice dry red blend, but alas, this is a Jelly Wine. In fact, my teeth are aching a bit after a few glasses.
So glad that there are a many many more reds out there to try, as i won't be going back for this one.

Greetings on this warm Friday afternoon. Hope you are doing well and keeping cool. I've retreated to the cool dark depths of the Pinhead Studios to play some pinball and crack open a cold one. Today I have a 22 ounce bomber open of Deschutes Brewing Foray Belgian IPA. I was recently up in Portland and grabbed a great "can" glass that Powell's books was selling and thought the Deschutes would fit perfectly in the glass as one of the brewery's pubs is just a few blocks away.
This beer pours a very pale yellow with a nice white frothy head. Smells of pears and bananas and a bit of citrus. On the tongue - first with the bitterness of the 60 IBU, then some more Belgian yeast notes and a cascade of citrus from the Galaxy and Mosaic hops. The finish is a nice crackery malt goodness from the Pilsner malts. Great beer if you can find it in your neck of the woods, It is a seasonal only offered in Summer.
If you have never been to the main Powell's bookstore in downtown Portland, you need to get there. Music books, Science Fiction, a wonderful coffee shop and the best staff around. I was able to pick up a hardcover of "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby for a tenner. Much needed, as the paperback copy I have is in tatters from multiple readings. Now I can circle and outline some of my favorite quotes in the hardback!
