Anderson Valley Brewing Summer Solstice Cream Ale
Creeping up over the 90 degree mark over here on the Left Coast, so time for a nice light session ale. Poured the summer seasonal from the Anderson Valley Brewing Company, a cream ale called Summer Solstice. Brewed with a proprietary recipe that must include some caramel and honey flavors, this one has a creamy rich taste with very little hop bite. At only 5% ABV, it goes down smooth and begs to pour another. I've been working my way through a 6-pack these last few weeks and have found the carbonation level to vary quite a bit - from almost flat to just a finger of head. Wonder if I got some that were bottled during a bad day on the bottling line? Don't like the fact that the carbonation is all over the place - doesn't speak too well of the brewery. The 3 that had carbonation were great and I'd recommend you try it yourself, but I won't be going back for more, as Russian Roulette is not my favorite game.

Greg Ginn of Black Flag suing former band mates in Flag for copyright infringement
(DYING SCENE – Johnny X) Welp, I suppose this was bound to happen sooner or later but unfortunately it doesn’t make it any less disheartening for the punk scene now that its here. You surely know by now that two versions of legendary hardcore punk act Black Flag have reunited and are playing shows and festivals the world over. Only one of the two would be using the Black Flag name, (Greg Ginn on guitar, Ron Reyes on vocals, Gregory Moore on drums and Dale Nixon on bass) while the other has designated themselves as “Flag” (Keith Morris on vocals, Chuck Dukowski on bass, Bill Stevenson on drums, Stephen Egerton on guitar and Dez Cadena also on guitar).
Anyway, according to a report in the Hollywood Reporter, original Black Flag co-owner Greg Ginn is suing his former band mates now in Flag for copyright infringement, stating the rights to the name and logo are owned solely by him and his label SST Records.
The articles states:
“He sued his 1979-mid 1980s bandmates Friday, seeking an injunction against their current tour, which kicked off in May and will stop in Los Angeles (pending this case) for FYF Fest on August 24. The suit describes the alleged infringement of the logo and name “Flag” as “a colorable imitation” that’s “likely to cause confusion, mistake or deception among consumers.”
No statement has been issued by the Flag camp but we’ll keep you posted.

Helles Schlenkerla Lager
It's 90 degrees outside, so I've retreated into the cool dark confines of the Pinhead Studios for a cold one, some vinyl and a game or two of Palooka. The extra ball is lit and the lager is poured. This afternoon, I've got a Helles Schlenkerla Lagerbier from the brewery in Bamburg, Germany. This is one of the legendary "Rauchbiers", or smoked beers native to that area of Bavaria. Now, I've had the Marzen before, and since it is a bit on the warm side here on the left coast, I went for a lighter version of the smoked beer. This one starts out as a nicely balanced typical German Lager, but the aftertaste is where the unique smokiness takes over, leaving you with a thrist for more. The website claims that every coaster at the brewery states -
"Even if the brew tastes somewhat strange, at the first swallow, do not stop, because soon you will realize that your thirst will not decrease and your pleasure will visibly increase"

2011 Benefactor Shiraz
Opened up an Australian Shiraz this afternoon from Benefactor Cellars. I searched high and low for any info on the winery that is responsible for this Shiraz and, for some reason, they remain hidden from view. After having a sip, I can see why. Very flat and lifeless, not much fruit and very dry. The alcohol level is at 13%, so it's not a hot one, but it just doesn't present much to like. Hey - you get what you pay for.

Anderson Valley Brewing Hop Ottin’ IPA
It's a fine Sunday afternoon out here on the left coast - about to hit the 90 degree mark, so time for a cold one. I've popped the top on a nice Anderson Valley Hop Ottin' IPA that should make short work of my thirst. Nice three (or four) finger head and loads of fruit (green raisins, pears, all sortsa citrus). Wonderful malt notes and a very strong backbone leads me to think this is one of the best IPA's I've had. But wait, what about the Sculpin? OK, this one is #2.....

Proceeds go to the Victims of the Boston Marathon bombing and more recently the victims of mother nature in Oklahoma City. 117 tracks of bands many have not heard of along with well-known established punk bands. They all put their hearts and souls into the music. Multiple generations of punk can be heard on this comp. You can also pick up a shirt to help get the word out. Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager
Whew - it is a hot one out here on the Left Coast. Time to retreat to the cool darkness of the Pinhead Studios for a cold lager, some pinball and the sweet sound of vinyl. The lager this afternoon is the seasonal offering from the Sierra Nevada brewery, the little microbrewery that could, located a few hours north of here. This one is perfect for a hot day - crisp and dry with the traditional Perle, Saaz and Spalter hops that give it a nice grassiness - sorta like the Sauvignon Blanc that is cooling in the fridge. The second Summerfest will work perfectly as I rotisserie a whole chicken on the grill and then I'll switch to the wine while I carve the bird up. I've got a bowl of those great Trader Joe's blistered peanuts handily next to the grill, so I'm set.

2011 Grifone Primitivo
Cracked open an Italian red this afternoon to go with an aged T-Bone that I'll be slapping on the grill in a few hours. This Red is a Primitivo from the Puglia in Southern Italy. It turns out that the Primitvo grape is very close genetically to the Californian grown Zinfandel, so that explains why I enjoy this one so much. Yes, I am a sucker for a Zin. This wine has nice color and the closed nose needs a little swirling and aeration before sticking your nose in the glass. If you do give it time, a nice aroma of spicy dark fruit hits you first, then as you drink that first glass, some minerality joins the flavors and aromas to finish off the experience. This was purchased at my local Trader Joes for less than $5, a bargain if you ask me.
The T-bones I've got ready to go on the grill have been aging for 2 week in a moisture permeable drybag. This process sucks moisture out of the steak which concentrates the flavor and it also allows the natural enzymes of the steak to start to breakdown the connective tissue resulting in a very very tender steak.

All Punk Island All Episode
Ballast Point Sculpin IPA
A hot one this afternoon - time to retreat to the cool and dark Pinhead Studios for a cold beer and some pinball. Picked up a couple bottles of Sculpin IPA from the fine folks over at Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits. The Ballast Point website tells us that the Sculpin fish has spines that are poisonous, but the meat of the Sculpin is some of the tastiest fish that you can find. To quote from the website "something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Scuplin IPA". I have to agree. At 70 IBU on the bitterness scale this one is close to a palate wrecker, but has a fine balance that earns it a place on my list of favorite beers.
This IPA should go well with the fresh Salmon fillets that I'll be slapping on the grill a bit later and the mango salsa that I've mixed up to go with it. Mangos, jalapenos, red onion, cilantro, lime juice and cucumber. Hmm, kinda like the Sculpin, tastes great but has a bite.

Iron Man 3 and Poetry from the Benefit
2010 Piccini Chianti
Recently watched the Godfather and it reminded me that I hadn't cracked open a Chianti in a long while. Then I decided to go all out with the Italian and cook up a savory Pasta Puttanesca to go with it. The sauce is simmering on the stovetop and I'm listening to some Sinatra on the juke while I write this.
This Chianti is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Ciliegiolo and 100% drinkable. Nice soft tannins and a dry finish - this should go well with the Puttanesca. The Piccini folks have been making wine in the Tuscany region since 1882 - four generations - and recently changed it's label for the Chianti from the boring black and white to a bright Orange. According to the website, the orange symbolizes all the energy, youth and passion that characterizes the Piccini familia.

Ninkasi Brewing Company Total Domination IPA
It's a hot one out there - time for a brewski. I've popped open a cold one this afternoon, courtesy of the fine folks over at the Ninkasi Brewing Company in Eugene, Oregon. The second of their beers that I've tried, this IPA is wonderfully hopped and has a tasty malt background I have to admit that I like their Renewale ESB a bit more, but this brewery is hitting all the right notes for me and Ill be picking up their Triceratops Double IPA and Oatis Oatmeal Stout in the future.

Dan Vapid & The Cheats finishing recording new full-length
from DyingScene.com – Dan Vapid and The Cheats have finished tracking their second full-length at Atlas Studios. The 14 songs were recorded by Matt Allison and Justin Yates and the record will be mixed later this month by Matt Allison. While no release date has been set, the band is looking to release the record sometime in July on Torture Chamber Records. The band is also playing Insubordination Festival this year as well some upcoming dates with ex-Leftover’s frontman Kurt Baker. Dates can be found here.
Dan Vapid and the Cheats released their debut, self titled album in October, 2011 and you can stream/purchase it on their bandcamp page.
