A Wonderful Fall Day out here on the Left Coast. Wearing jeans for the first time as it is below 70 out, but sunny as hell. It's that time of year to crack open the Dark Ones...... I've got a Porter from the Southern Oregon Brewing Company opened up this afternoon and it is tasting heavenly. I picked this up earlier this year on a trip to Portland and on the advice of a listener of the show. Been saving it for when the weather turns and am kicking myself for not opening it up sooner. Very light for a porter, almost in the English style, very unlike the big chewy American Porters that I have had before. This one is very Malt Forward and what malt they put in this one - they use Weyermann's dehusked Carafa II malt that lends the chocolate and coffe undertones. Briess Carapils, Rahr 2-row and Caramel malts give it body and Danish lager yeast fermented at ale temperatures (much like the so called "steam" style of Anchor brewing in San Francisco) is a bit of magic that catapults this one up to the top of the Porter heap. I get a bit of burnt fig and a very light soy sauce when it is in the nose and a very nice smooth finish that I'm loving. From what I have read, this one is supposed to have a burnt character like a Rauchbier, but I'm not getting that. This video review below calls out the smokiness - hey maybe the aging that my bottle has undertook smoothed it out?
So, about 4 weeks ago I was in a field in Byers, Colorado (about 30 miles East of Denver) waiting for the Replacements to hit the stage. This is the story of that day and the music that was played by the Mats.

Nice and sunny out here on the left coast. I've got a wonderful Argentinian Malbec opened up this afternoon - all set to go with some split pea soup and grilled sausages. This one is from the Uco Valley in the Mendoza region and is produced by the Bodega Atamisque folks. Nice and earthy with just a hint of some red fruit, this Malbec is right at the heart of the style. Dark as ink with a nice balance and a silky finish - highly recommended.

Please don't arrest me - I confess! I smuggled a six pack of Ska Brewing Modus Operandi IPA in my checked luggage on my return trip from Denver last Sunday. But hey - it was for a friend, officer.......or if you're a friendly Officer....
Seriously, I have one thing to say about this beer - WOW! This IPA is almost as good as Ballast Point's Sculpin. The Ska Brewing IPA has a bit of an edge in my mind as the can and website for the beer is playful and colorful, a bit of a contrast to the conservative images and website for Ballast Point. I'm just a bit upset that I can't get this beer out in California. Ska brewing, if you are listening, please distribute it out to us in Northern California - this is good stuff and will sell well! Hey, your website says that you are distributing it to Arizona - just a state away......
The website (which I have a link to just below) is very well done and fun to peruse. The little music player on the bottom (which doesn't start until you hit the start button - yes!) serves up some serious Ska - listening to The Toasters Big Red right now.

Wine is the subject tonight and I've served up some fermented juice squeezed from the finest vintages of Britpop, Country Funk, Rockabilly, Motown and Punk for you. Grab a glass and enjoy!
Got a Spanish Red open and some Pigskin on the tele. Wishing I was in Chicago right now, as the Mats will be playing in a few short hours. Looking forward to news of that show and also to Denver where I will be seeing the Replacements live in just 6 short days!
The Red I have open tonight is a 2011 Honor Vera Monastrell from the Bodega Juan Gil Giminez winery in the Jumilla region of Spain. The Monastrell grape is better known as Mouvedre in France and is used typically in southern french blends for it's dark red color and perfumed nose.
Monstrell (Mouvedre) on the Wiki -----> earthy notes
My impression of this one is very favorable, especially if it is allowed to open up with a bit of oxygen. The first glass I had last night was a bit closed and tart, but the last glass I am enjoying this afternoon is just wonderful - nicely scented nose and some great fruit and leather notes as it runs across the tongue. Not bad for a wine that you can snag yourself down at Trader Joes for less than 10 dollars.

The year is 1977 and some band is in the basement giving candy bars to a ten year old so they will play bass for them. In other Headlines, the Sex Pistols, Cheap Trick and the Saints release albums.
Retreated to the Pinhead Studios for a little Pinball, a new Zine and a nice Hefeweizen. The beer is a Kellerweis from the fine folks over at Sierra Nevada Brewery. A classic Hefeweizen in the German open fermented style, this one is very refreshing on this hot summer day. Banana, cloves and a distinct sourness makes this one Killer.

In preparation for the 1977 show #2, here's the very first 1977 show from April 18th, 2010
Buckle your seatbelts, as it's gonna be a bumpy ride in the Red Red Wine On a Sunday Time Machine. We are heading back to 1977, with stops in 65, 75 and 76 thrown in for good measure. Don't worry, the lower deck is at the perfect cellar temperature for the provisions that I've brought along.
With all that’s been going on stateside lately, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to throw together a show focused upon anti-war songs and social and political protest songs. I asked the Manifesto listeners for some suggestions, and then … Continue reading →
(FROM PUNKROCKERS-RADIO.DE) Punk still is not dead. With the fifth edition of “Fucking The Nation Every Day” under our belt, we’ve found more than a hundred bands from all over the world who have ties to punk rock, more or less. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Because out there, many, many more bands are waiting to be discovered while they rehearse in basements, garages and bunkers until their fingers bleed, just to play their asses off at a run-down club in front of an audience of five. Let’s face it: None of them will probably ever become the next big thing. Certainly not by being on this compilation. But that’s not the point. The point is doing what you like, making the kind of music that you burn for, and knowing that all over the world, there are people who feel the same. So: Stay punk – and support those bands whose hearts beat for punk rock.
The Replacements are indeed back - tonight I pay tribute to their return and take the Jukebox for a spin as well with some 7" vinyl from Jett, Pitney and Ant.
A wonderful Labor Day weekend out here on the Left Coast. I've popped open a nice Tripel to start the afternoon off nicely. This one is a Ruhstaller Arendt California Tripel, a local small batched beer that I got a chance to try last Sunday out at the Ruhstaller Farm. Picked up the nice little Ruhstaller logo'd glass that you see in the photo as well. Now this Tripel is typical of the style - very malt forward with just a bit of Hops and lotsa sweetness. My favorite Tripel is La Fin Du Monde and this Tripel is giving La Fin a run for it's money. The Ruhstaller has some interesting Banana notes, most likely from the yeast chosen to ferment the malts, while the La Fin normally leans to the Apricot / Peach flavors. I'm hoping the Ruhstaller folks brew this one up again at some point, since it looks like it is limited to just 200 cases for now. I'll be heading out this week to find another bottle before it disappears.
This should go nicely later when cooling off the heat from a Carnitas salad I'm whipping up with some nice and HOT homemade salsa - yep - the three (or is it four) alarm kind. Ghost peppers anyone?
Got my brand spanking new RPR T-Shirt - Thanks Tommer!

It's a nice August Sunday afternoon perfect for a bit of the old Red Red Wine. Got a Bodega Norton Malbec opened up for tonight. Now, I've tried the 2010 version of the wine a few years ago and Iwasn't too impressed. This vintage is a bit better, but I might wait a couple more years to try it again. It's got the prerequisite smoky character I love in Malbec, but is a bit thin for my taste - I like 'em big and bold!
Bodega Norton website -----> Rich Dusky Red (hmmm - they haven't yet updated to 2012??)
Original air date on Thumbin Radio – Friday, August 23, 2013. No theme tonight, just a mixed bag of classics and a few tracks from current artists. [to_like id="2147"][/to_like]

(FROM CLEVELAND.COM) Cheetah Chrome — – the mad, guitar genius behind 1970s Cleveland punk legends the Dead Boys and Rocket from the Tombs — has been recording and touring for almost four decades. He’s been a bandmate and a bandleader, a session man and record-label executive, and he’s documented his wild live shows in concert recordings such as “Alive in Detroit.” But the 58-year-old Chrome has never released a studio collection of solo material.
That odd hole in his musical resume will be filled soon with “Solo,” a 7-song EP of tunes from two recording sessions — one from 1996 led by Dead Boys’ producer Genya Ravan and another from 2010 featuring the New York Dolls’ Sylvain Sylvain.
“Solo” will be released Oct. 8 on Nashville’s Plowboy Records. It is timed to coincide with the October premiere of the film, “CBGB,” Hollywood’s upcoming look at the New York punk scene and the famed concert club that was its home base.
Chrome is portrayed in the film by “Harry Potter” regular Rupert Grint, and makes a cameo as a taxi driver.
Relaxing this afternoon in the Pinhead Studios with a nice locally produced lager - a Ruhstaller Gilt Edge Golden Lager. This one is all California, with locally farmed Metcalf and Copeland malts and Cluster and Cascade Hops. Those hops really stand out in this lager, perhaps the hoppiest lager I've ever tasted. Pine and lemon are strong, perhaps a bit overpowering for the malts. Nice dry, spicy finish that differentiates this from a typical lager. Sold in four packs of cans, I'll be going back for more this summer.

Tonight the subject is that 1989 movie Say Anything. Call it a sort of alternative soundtrack to the movie with some Ramones, Clash, Glands and Material Issue.
It is a Red Wine Sunday at the Pinhead Studios - uncorked a Nero d'Avola from Ruggero di Tasso to go with a little Spaghetti Bolognese that is simmering on the stovetop. This wine is made from the jet black Nero d' Avola grapes that are vinified on the southern tip of Sicily. Similar to Shiraz, this one is dark and bold with dark red fruit and some nice spice notes. Yes - a very nice Italian Red that goes for less than a fiver down at your local Trader Joes. Here's a couple reviews -
