2012 Berryessa Gap Zinfandel

It's a Red Wine Sunday with one of my favorite Zinfandels. The Berryessa Gap winery has been producing a very consistently good Zinfandel for the last 5 years. Tried there 2006 vintage back in 2009 and loved it. I've never looked back from then on, buying at least one or two bottles each vintage - excellent small winery.

Dark rich purplish red in the glass with a wonderful nose, full of that Zinfandel perfume. On the tongue brambly blackberry with some nice tartness. Smooth on the back of the tongur with a bit of warming goodness. Should go well with the grilled Salmon and mango salsa on the menu tonight.

Oskar Blues Brewing Pinner Throwback IPA

Greetings and Salutations (sorry, I just watched Heathers with Christian Slater and Wynona Ryder last night with daughter #1 and we've been quoting the movie all day....). I hope you are having a great Sunday. just poured a Pinner from Oskar Blues Brewery. They call it a "Throwback IPA", not sure why? Maybe it's because of the 4.9% alcohol in this session ale? You can "Throwback" a few more that usual without the effects? Not Sure.

I do know why they named it Pinner - according to the Cannibist.co webiste (see link below) a "Pinner" is a tiny, thin joint low on marijuana content. Now why would Oskar Blues (a brewery in the cannibus legal state of Colorado) name a beer with this moniker and also have a quote just under

the top of the can "Can I be Blunt?". Maybe because they are a bit loopy? No, you see cannibus and the lowly hop plant share a common taxonomy, in that the plants are in the same family (namely the "cannabacae" family for all you botanists out there). Hey - you learn a new thing every day is my motto - never knew that, but it makes sense as many of the aromas I love in beer kinda smell like fresh leaves.

2012 Sebastiani B-Side Cabernet

A wonderful spring afternoon out here on the left coast - gonna hit around 85. Perfect time for grillin. Tonight I've got some Kabobs prepped up and ready to hit the grill paired with chocolae covered strawberries for desert. I thought a nice hearty Cab would go well with both, so picked up a B-Side Cabernet down at the local wine shop.

This Cabernet starts with the very distinctive vegetal Cabernet flavor that I am not a huge fan of, but then the fruit forward notes start adding up and swiftly overcome it.. Bluebery, Plum, Cherry predominate with some smoke and leather on the backside. Not the best Cabernet I've ever tasted, but very solid - it looks like they have a Red Blend as well - I'll need to track that one down.

Lagunitas Brewing Hop Stoopid Double IPA

Happy Mother's Day! - hope all the Mothers out there are well taken care of - I'll be hitting the grill soon to prepare dinner for the Mother of my 2 wonderful daughters. She has requested the following: Grilled Filet Mignon with sauteed mushrooms and onions, grilled asparagus and a butternut squash risotto. Hey - that sounds wonderful to me, so I better get cooking!

Just uncapped a Double IPA to get the cooking mojo started. This IPA is a serious beer - 102 IBUs and 8% alcohol. Wowsa.... a bit of a sniff and I can detect some pine, lotsa lemon and a faint waft of Ganga... interesting. First sip and it is lighting up my tongue like a shot around the "horn" on the Lightning Ball pinball machine you see in the picture. Bells, whistles, Marching men Marching - yep right down the throat - spicy and bitter with no let up - ouch. Hmmm seriously this one is just Stoopid with the Hops.... I have had better Double IPAs (Green Flash and Dirtwolf come to mind), but this one is growing on me as I work through the first glass. Yes Lagunitas makes some quality brews. I'll keep the bomber handy as I grill up the Mother's Day menu mentioned above - Cheers!

2012 Denada Cellars Red Blend

It's a Red Wine Sunday this week with a Chilean Red Blend. This one is from the Denada Cellars in the Valle de Maule and is a blend of primarily Carneriere, with some Malbec, Syrah and Cabernet blended in as well.

On the nose it's smoke, smoke, smoke - did I mention smoke. Maybe it's the rosemary twigs smoking away on the grill, but I really think it is the wine.

On the tongue, lotsa spicy tannins with more smokey goodness and some Strawberry? Or is it Currant? Some kinda nutty goodness too - Almonds? Nope - Hazelnuts - that's it.

Stone Delicious IPA

Greetings on this fine Sunday afternoon. I've cracked open what has become my new favorite Stone Brewing company beer, their Delicious IPA. Hey, if you have the balls to name your product Delicious, you better have the beer to stand up to the name. Stone certainly does as this beer is truly lip smacking good!

Hopped with a new hop variety called Lemondrop, this beer is balanced nicely and juicy as hell. One of those beers where each sip calls you back for another. This one is labelled as a gluten reduced beer, whatever that is. Maybe it is important to those with gluten intolerance but for me - bring on the gluten. The lack of gluten in this beer in no way detracts from the flavor, in fact maybe it enhances it. Okay, maybe not, but this is a great tasting beer and highly recommended.

2013 Charles Smith Boom Boom! Syrah

Boom Boom! It's a Syrah from Washington and it's exploding in my mouth. The Syrah is from the Charles Smith Winery in Walla Walla. This one made it into my checked luggage on that trip up to Walla Walla a few weeks ago and now it has made it's final journey into my glass.

The wine is a nice shade of black - very dark and inviting. On the nose, a nice herbal earthy richness. The first taste is full of blackberries and smoke. Concentrated with a long finish - very nice! This one should go well with the NY Steaks I'll be slapping on the grill in a bit.

Greetings on this Easter Eve. I will be a bit busy tomorrow chasing around the Easter Bunny, so I thought I would uncap another beer that made is back from my recent rip to Washington State. This beer I picked up at the Laht Neppur Alehouse, as they had many Washington State beers on the retail side of the Alehouse.

This beer is dark brown with a small head of caramel. The nose picks up some cocoa and coffee. Ah yes, this one drinks really smooth with the chocolate hitting you right away and then some coffee and plum as it slides down. Very nice Porter. not the best I've had, but very solid. I'll be happy to work my way through the bottle as it is only 5.9% alcohol.

2010 Tre Nova Ripasso

Uncorked a bottle from the Tre Nova Brand - a 2010 Ripasso Red. Brought this back with me from my recent trip to Walla Walla, Washington. Tasted through some of the reds on offer at the tasting room in downtown Walla Walla and this one struck me as wonderfully intense and the story behind the making of the wine is just as intense.

This wine is made in the traditional Venetian style of Ripasso, where the freshly fermented wine is passed back through the dried lees and skins to give it a bit more body. The winemaker tells us that the 2010 vintage lees developed some Botrytis, which yielded a bit more glycerin in the finished wine. This leads to a great mouth feel and I have to agree - smooth smooth smooth. In the nose, I'm getting a bit of chocolate and the taste is a fine mix of dried and fresh red fruit. Creamy finish - this should go great with the Tiramisu we have planned for dessert and the BBQ short ribs that will be hitting the grill soon,

Laht Neppur Piper Canyon Scotch Ale

It's a wonderful Spring Day out here on the Left Coast - hitting about 71 with a couple of rain clouds passing through - love this time of year. I've cracked open a Scotch Ale that I spirited back in my checked bags on my trip to Walla Walla Washington a few weeks back. Survived the trip, but it won't survive the afternoon as I've got a beef brisket slowly cooking away to accompany it.

The Scotch Ale is from the Laht Neppur brewery of Waitsburg Washington. I picked it up at the Alehouse run by the Brewery located just around the corner from my hotel room and just a few doors down from the Charles Smith Winery tasting room I spoke of last week. Had a taste of the beer at the Alehouse and decided to bring home a 20 ouncer to enjoy later - meaning this afternoon.

Laht Neppur is Gaelic for Drink To Life and the beers at the brewery run the gamut of styles, from the Scotch Ale that I have opened to a wonderful Peach Hefeweizen with a Stout, IPA, Nut Brown and Cram Ale in between. They have a selection on tap at the Alehouse and have a selection bottled as well. I don't believe the bottles have been distributed down in California or in other states, but will keep an eye open for them, as I did enjoy the tasters that I had at the Alehouse.

The color is of a dark burnt brown sugar with a nutty rock candy nose. The flavor pops right on to the tongue with nuts, brown bread and that rock candy flavor. Warning - this one goes down smooth!

2014 Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl Riesling

Greetings on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. I've got a bottle of white wine open tonight - yes, you heard me right - no red on this Sunday. The reason - well I happened to stumble upon a wonderful Riesling while I was up in Walla Walla, Washington last weekend. The downtown is full of tasting rooms and the Charles Smith Winery Tasting room was just around the corner from the hotel that I was staying at.

Brought a couple of bottles from that Winery home with me and I thought I would start with the white. This Riesling is sourced from the Evergreen Vineyard along the cliffs of the Columbia River in Washington where it is grown in the fragmented basalt and gravel silt soil (more on the rocks later).

The nose is full of apricot and honey. Clear and bright, this wine tastes of tart apple and has a wonderful fresh peach layer as well. This wine is off dry, not sweet and has some nice acidity that is balanced well by the Rock. Yes, this wine has the Rock, as in the minerality that balances out the acidity so well. More on the Minerality in the link below. A wonderful wine that should go well with the Chinese food I've ordered up tonight. I'm a little under the weather (but recovering nicely) so I won't be cooking tonight. This wine will pair perfectly with the Spicy Shrimp Chow Fun that I've ordered. The second glass should pair well with the cold meds and send me off to some much needed slumber.
