DYING SCENE RECORDS has just announced that on March 31st it will be releasing “Dasvidaniya”, the long awaited debut full-length from Albuquerque, New Mexico punk act STABBED IN BACK.
Heavy and melodic with a touch of hard rock swagger, the release features twenty-four minutes of fist pumping punk rock anthems that are as aggressive as they are soulful. But don’t take our word for it, stream (and grab embed code for) the album’s title track right here!
Digital pre-orders are available now on the Dying Scene Records bandcamp.

Sunny but a bit chilly out here in California. Have no fear, as I have a Winter Wheat to keep me warm, specifically Anchor Brewing Winter Wheat. This beer is brewed seasonally by Anchor with five different wheats from all over the world, including one right in Anchor's backyard. One of the varieties is a soft winter wheat grown in the Bay Area used primarily for Atisanal flatbeards, cakes and pastries (according to the Anchor website). Artisanal - really Anchor? - isn't this Beer we are talking about....
This one pours jet black in the glass with a nice chocolaty cream head. Smells like bread baking in the over - maybe a dark rye or something similiar - yes with some whole walnuts too. On the tongue, it is surprisingly light with some nice dark cherry sweetness. Very crisp and clean finish - kinda like a pilsner. A wonderful beer that I need to get more of - before the season is up!

A Blustery Sunday out here on the West Cast. Keeping warm with a Red Blend from the fine folks at the Murphy Goode Winery in Healdsburg. The blend is called Homefront Red and is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Petite Sirah , Petit Verdot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The interesting thing about the wine is the fact that proceeds from the sale of the wine goes to Operation Homefront, which provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors.
The wine pours a nice dark red, most likely due to the Petite Verdot and smells of Vanilla and Oak. On the tongue more vanilla and sour cherry, plum and spice. I have to admit that when I went to purchase the wine I was looking for either the Murphy Goode Pinot Noir or one of their Zinfandels (Liar's Dice or Snake Eyes). This wine is very nice, but I'd not go back for another bottle as I'd select the Pinot Noir or one of the Zinfandels first.
Cheers,
Jerry

A glorious Spring (late Winter) day out here on the left coast. It's gonna hit 70 degrees here today. I expected the weather to be a bit dreary, so opted for a nice dark beer. I've got a Nøgne Ø Terrapin Imperial Rye Porter open this afternoon. This beer is the result of a collaboration between Nøgne Ø Brewery located in Grimstad, Norway and the Terrapin Brewery located in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA.
The beer has a nice aroma - chocolate, cocoa and that wonderful spiciness of Rye. On the tongue, the smoothness of the beer is highlighted with generous malt mouth feel and just a hint of tropical hops. The ABV is 9.0% and it is sold in a 500ml bottle.

A Rainy Day out here in California. Don't worry about me, I've got a Spanish red to keep me warm. This wine comes from the Catalunya region of Spain and is a blend of Merlot and Tempranillo. Dark Dark red, the wine smells of plums and raspberries and on the tongue a bit of spice is added as well as some green olive and anise. A solid, drinkable red that is well balanced. A bargain down at my local Trader Joes for a fiver. This should go well with the Braised Short Ribs that are bubbling in the oven. Threw a bit of the wine in the pot to make the flavors blend nicely.
Cheers,
Jerry

It's a Strong Ale on a Saturday, not a Red Wine on a Sunday this week. Tomorrow is the "Super Bowl" - not so super to me, but i'll be watching and I'll not be posting. Luckily, I'll be in charge of the beverages at the neighborhood event, so I'll be bringing some of the Brown Sugga' and some of the new Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter IPA - haven't tried that one. Some wine will be brought as well, leaning to the Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel varietals.
This Brown Shugga' is categorized as an American Strong Ale. Strong it is, coming in at almost 10 %. Nice head, but a little thin, as the fermentable material is primarily Brown Sugar, not malt. So the protein structure of the head is weak and does not leave much lacing on the glass. Not a big deal, but it tells you that this in not your ordinary beer. According to the Lagunitas legend, this one was a mistake that everyone loved, as they used too much brown sugar in the first batch.
The taste is amazing - molasses goodness, nice balance of bitter and sweet. Biscuit is the predominate flavor with just a bit of cinnamon and apple in there too. Perfect for a cold winter night.

Ahh yesssss - a Zinfandel that just exudes juiciness. Opened up a Christmas gift from a friend and I have to say that if you have friends that give you a nice wine, keep them close!
The wine is from a small producer in Amador county - Jeff Runquist Wines. He names the wine by one letter - "Z". Nice and simple. He sources the grapes from centuries old vines and mixes a bit (15%) of local Petite Sirah into the wine. Now, I have to admit this wine surprised me a bit as many of the old vine zins that I love are big, bold and dark dark dark. This one is dark, but a bit lighter that what I expected. Got some great Blackberry and cinnamon in the nose and it's very well balanced on the tongue. This one should go well with the Salmon (pan fried in Macadamia nut oil) on the menu tonight. What a great combination, if you haven't tried it - a nice mix of flavors.
Cheers,
Jerry

A fine Winter Day - Perfect for some Winter Welcome. No - not just any winter welcome, I've poured a Samuel Smith Winter Welcome this afternoon. This beer is brewed at the Samuel Smith Brewery in Tadcaster England. They have been brewing beer there since 1758. I dug up my history book and it appears that the brewery has been around longer than that county called the USA. Interesting - maybe they know a thing or two about brewing beer.
This one pours a clear copper with a wonderful 2 finger head. Diving into the glass is like sticking your nose into some fresh baked bread. Love the yeast notes of bananas and the Fuggle and Golding hop character that gives the beer a nice crisp and dry finish. On the tongue that banana and clove taste lingers. You know this beer does not get the credit it deserves if you read some of the American Craft Brew blogs. I think it is a case of not understanding the beer and what it represents. This is not a racy hopbomb of an IPA. It's a standard ale that delivers the goods! Simple and straightforward with no cocoa nibs or star fruit in the mix and I for one am happy about it.
Cheers,

A Fine Sunday Afternoon out here in the West. I've got a bottle of South Amercian red open tonight - specifically a Marchigue Carmenere. Caremenere is a French varietal that is not grown extensively in France, but has found a home in South America.
Dark ruby red, the wine has a nose of red fruits and spice. On the tongue it is a bit spicy with some soft tannins and just a bit of residual sugar to round them out. This should go well with the Tri-Tip on the grill tonight.
Cheers,

Overcast and a bit dreary out here in Northern California, but I'm keeping warm with the latest incarnation of Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale. One of the first, if not the first, west coast style IPAs, they have been brewing this one for 33 years now. Yes, that is 33 YEARS and they are still hitting it outta the park. Very balanced and flavorful, this one sits at 6.5% ABV and 65 IBU.
You could probably balance a couple of quarters on the peaks of the head on this beer. Perfect protein structures produce this kind of performance. See the link below for some Good Head advice....... .
Cheers,

Rainy Day - perfect for a robust Zinfandel. Got the holiday decorations up and it is time to relax and enjoy the fruits of my labor. Ok - the fruits of the Sobon Estates labor. Sobon Estates is one of my favorite producers of Zinfandel in Amador County. Their Zins are consistently good and this one is from the Rocky Top vineyard.
Very dark and purple, this wine has a wonderful nose of perfume and intense dark spice. On the tongue, Blackberries predominate with some vanilla and plum on the way to the back of the throat. At 14.5%, this one warms all the way down. This will go great with the homemade Minestone and fresh baked French bread that my wife is whipping up for the evening.
Cheers,

Clear but cold day out here on the left coast. Hibernating in the Pinhead Studios playing some Palooka. Cracked open a beer that I recently found down at my local Trader Joes. The Scottish origin intrigued me but it wasn't till I got it home that I realized that it is from the Brewdog folks - the same guys who are in that Brewdogs TV show. I've seen quite a few of the episodes and enjoyed it quite a bit - especially the San Francisco show (where they captured fog and used it for the H20 in the beer) and the Portland episode (where they brewed beer going down the Mighty Columbia).
What a surprise when I poured out the beer and was greeted with a wave of tropical goodness. The nose on this beer just hits you right in the, uh, Nose. A very clear and light shade of amber, this one smells like a West Coast IPA, but looks like a Pilsner. The taste is just as tropical with a very nice malt finish that begs you to have another taste. Juicy, Juicy, Juicy - did I mention that it was Juicy?

A wonderful fall day - temps in the 70's and lotsa sun. I've opted for a small bottle of Port this Sunday. Small, as in this Distant Cellars Ten 88 375ml bottle. Port as in a red blend of Old Vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc and Pinotage fortified with grape spirits in the style of Old World Ports.
I was very happy to find this bottle down at my local Trader Joes as the Distant Cellars website tells me that the wine is sold out - they must have sold a bit to TJ's.
This one pours an inky purple and has some very nice red fruit and spice notes on the nose. The taste is wonderful with blackberry, plum and vanilla. At 18.4% the warming of the mouth and throat is wonderful. Nice smooth finish - this should go well with the Dark Chocolate dipped strawberries that my daughter has prepared for dessert. Cheers!
