It's a cold, cold Saturday and I've got some French Red to warm me up. Opened up a 2012 Cotes du Rhone from the Famille Perrin winery located just outside of Orange in the south of France.
Posting this and the show for this week a bit early as I'll be heading down to San Francisco to spend some time with some family and go shopping at Amoeba, as I have a few gift certificates that were given to me as Christmas presents. But tonight, I've been doing the annual 45 and LP sort as the vinyl that I have played on the show and the new stuff I've bought has been put in unsorted boxes throughout the year. During the holidays I like to sort all these and place them back in alphabetical order, so I can easily retrieve them. Yes, I know, I should have them in Autobiographical order as Rob has them in High Fidelity, but that would make it tough to find anything.....
Alright - back to the wine. Dark violet in the glass with a nose of cherries and spice. On the tongue more cherries and some earthy notes as well. A nice hearty everyday red, this one. Produced from Grenache, Mouvedre and Syrah grapes, this wine clocks in at 14% alcohol and is a wonderful bargain at around $15. Found this at my local grocer, but I've seen it at my local Trader Joes as well.

A cold, crisp sunny Saturday out here on the West Coast. Retreated to the Pinhead Studios for some Pinball and an IPA. This afternoon, I've cracked open a Knee Deep Brewing company Breaking Bud American IPA.
This one pours a nice dark yellow and has a wonderful 2 to 3 finger head. The odors wafting from the glass are wondrous. Now, I have had a Knee Deep offering before and was less than impressed, but recently, while Christmas shopping, I landed at my favorite Sushi Bar and the waiter convinced me to try the Breaking Bud. Boy, am I glad he did! Had two that evening and then bought a whole lot of unnecessary gifts..... (just kidding - I actually picked up a turntable for my oldest daughter - she is gonna love it- Keep the Vinyl Spirit Alive!).
So, I 'm hoping that the bottled product tastes as good as the draft. On the tongue, you get a crispness that is wonderful and the tropical notes that the mosaic hop imparts. Now, the draft version finished much smoother, while the bottle has a bit of a bite to it. It is still head and shoulders above the majority of the IPAs out there and I think a few locals agree as I had to visit three stores to find some. Yes the beer was sold out at the other 2 locations - an empty row in the cooler.....

Another Rainy Sunday, but I've got a nice French Red to keep me warm. This one comes from the folks at Hob Nob Wines and is called Wicked Red. Produced for this past Halloween, I was able to find it at a nice price and you might be able to as well.
This wine is produced from 40% Grenache, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Shiraz and 10% Pinot Noir. It pours a nice shade of dark purple and has a decent amount of legs. According to the website, it clocks in at 13.5%. The nose is all concentrated red fruit - blackberry, plum and cherry - heavenly. On the tongue, smooth, smooth, smooth - lots of residual sugar helps this one. Still nice and dry on the finish, but if you don't like a bit of sugar in your reds, I'd pass on this one. Me - I like it!
I also like the interesting screwcap (smooth on the outside - no ridges) and the artwork that is painted on the bottle. The Sugar Skull reminds me of one of my favorite bands - the Bonnevilles, as they have a similar logo.
Cheers,
Jerry

Rock’n’roll power trio Torpedohead have unleashed a new track called “Drunk On Sunday” from next year’s upcoming new album, and the song is being streamed exclusively right here on Real Punk Radio! At the helm, again, as producer is Siggi Bemm (Dave Lombardo, Tiamat, Lacuna Coil) and the track offers fast-forward driving rock with a modern-edge and a huge distinct Torpedohead hookline.
Combining a riff oriented hard-edged sound with melodic super-catchy choruses and fast and furious punk’n’roll while transforming this into their own sound, Germany’s power trio Torpedohead lives the imagination of a ’70s stadium rock’n’roll tape coming through a trashy ’90s stereo, digitally remastered today for speeding down the autobahn!

It's a Rainy Sunday - time for a hearty brew. Found a sweet mixed 12 pack case from the Magic Hat Brewery at my local Grocer. Caught my eye as one of the beers featured is called VINYL. Holy cow - how come I've never seen this one before????
Needless to say the 12 pack was purchased and I've got on of the three Vinyl Amber Lager open and ready to taste. This one poured a nice burnt orange color with a wispy head. The nose is faint with a bit of Crackerbread. Took a sip and was a bit underwhelmed. Love me a nice crisp lager and this one is the opposite of crisp. Took a look at the Beer Advocate site and it is rated at a 78 - Damn. Turning to the Rate Beer site, which is always generous - it is even worse - a 38 out of 100 - Ouch.
Now I am of the mind to only say positive things - so this one is drinkable - I won't be pouring it down the drain for sure, I just hope the other 3 varieties in the 12 pack are better..... Oh, and the brewery has a really cute promo video for the beer, which I'll embed here.

Good Afternoon. It's a cold one out here on the left coast. Time to head into the Pinhead Studios. The heater has been on all afternoon and the warm glow of the pinball machines are beckoning me. Time to finish off the bottle of red I started yesterday afternoon.
This wine is vinified by Wilson Vineyards in Clarksburg, California. They call it the Muddy Boot Red. It combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Franc into a wonderful tour of France.
The nose is predominately fruit (blackberry?) with some tannic spice on the tongue. The finish is smooth and the day of oxygen certainly helped. Yesterday, the freshly opened wine was tart and lifeless. I encourage everyone to decant reds or at least give them a few hours to open up before you pour them. This blend should go nicely with the Turkey soup bubbling away on the stovetop.
Cheers,
Jerry

Happy Sunday - looking forward to Thanksgiving here in the States and the inevitable Pie Day (the morning after wherein I have an assortment of pie for breakfast altogether with steaming mugs of coffee). In anticipation of that event, I've decided to grab a Cherry Lambic and the most readily available one at that.
Brouwerij Lindemans has been brewing up the wild Lambic style beer for generations - the brewery was founded in 1822. The style is known for the process wherein wild yeast is used to ferment the wort. Wild yeast, as opposed to the yeast most brewers use give the beer a "funky" and "sour" character and this beer is a great example. So that explains the Lambic, what about Kriek? Kriek means Cherry in Flemish and after the brewery finishes the Lambic, sour cherry juice is added to make this beer complete.

A crisp fall day out here on the left coast. Some rain this morning, but it had been clearing up and I might be able to fire up the grill in the open! I have some Tri-Tip marinating in the fridge and some chocolate for dessert, so I needed a nice hearty red to go with them.
This red blend is from the 2011 vintage and a great Sonoma Valley Winery called Gundlach Bundschu. Set on a little knoll in the valley, the winery has been operated since 1858 by six generations of the Bundschu family.

It's a Rainy Sunday here at the Pinhead Compound, but I have a nice Stout to keep me warm. I finally was able to find this Founder's Brewing company beer in a local market. It comes all the way from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
This one pours black as night and has a nice 1 1/2 to 2 finger mocha head. A great label that shows a young boy enjoying some oatmeal. Hey - I thought you couldn't have children represented on labels for alcoholic products - how the heck did they get around that!
Bringing it up to the nose, the aromas are of coffee and chocolate - two of my favorite things. On the tongue, more coffee, but not your average Folgers. This is the full roast and fully extracted flavours of Sumatra and Kona - hey this is the best cup of Java I've had in a few weeks. But there is more - full roundness on the palate and a cooling finish that just can't be described. Sure you've got some alcohol heat in there (8.3 %) and a bit of hops (60 IBU), but this one is smooth, smooth , smooth. I would characterize this one as an excellent cup of coffee with a bit of Stout thrown in.

Pre-Order Larry’s Book on Don Giovanni Records!
In 1987, off-the-grid punk agitator Larry Livermore began documenting the burgeoning DIY East Bay punk rock scene with the newly founded Lookout Records. He had no idea this little label, first run out of his solar powered cabin in the Northern California mountains, then a cramped room in the backstreets of Berkeley, would rise to international prominence, introducing the world to the likes of Green Day, Operation Ivy, and a host of other artists.
How To Ru(i)n A Record Label documents the author’s experiences from Gilman Street to Bialystok, Poland, as he built Lookout from the ground up, only to find himself losing control of the label a mere ten years later, and abruptly walking away from the multi-million dollar company when it was at its peak of success.
Throughout that time, however, he was central to the influential scene that gave birth to Gilman Street, Maximum Rocknroll, and a new generation of independent music that has had an everlasting effect on both the underground and mainstream. In the process, he just might even have found himself.

Greeting on this rainy Sunday afternoon. The cold Autumn breezes have blown in some Fall weather. Don't worry about me though, I have a nice Red Blend to keep me warm. This one is the 2012 vintage Toasted Head Untamed Red, produced by the Mondavi folks.
Had a glass of this last night as the Trick or Treaters were driving me crazy and the wine was a bit tart and hot. Let it open up a bit and get oxygenated and today it is a tad mellower. Nice earthy notes in this one, but not enough fruit to even it out for me. The blend is predominately Syrah with a bit of Zinfandel, Petit Syrah and Tempranillo thrown in. Not my favorite red blend, but this one is a bargain at 10 smackers.
Cheers,

It's a great Fall Sunday Afternoon and I have opened up 22 ounces of Autumn goodness called a Black Eye Ale from the Mendocino Brewing Company in Ukiah, Ca. No, didn't get a black eye when I popped the top on this one. This beer is a combination of Mendocino's Black Hawk Stout and their Eye of the Hawk Select Ale - get the connection?
This beer pours a dark burgundy with a small khaki brown head that dissipates rather quickly. Aromas of brown sugar and butterscotch tempt the nose and the first taste is malt forward with
a wonderful roundness that finishes with a bit of an IPA bite. This is sort of a Black and Tan, but made with a hoppier ale, so maybe it's in a category of it's own. Surprising light - kind of like the Black Lagers that have been a bit of a rage lately. Yes - A bit like those, but with some hop bite - a nice combination. It should go well with the Turkey Chili bubbling away in the crockpot. Ah yes - I love the Autumn - Dark beers and comfort foods.

F-Units, New York City’s pop punk rockers have just released their 3rd studio album! The self-titled EP is available now for download on their bandcamp page! The release party is Saturday, October 24th, 8:00pm at The Bowery Electric in NYC.
Grab your copy at http://f-units.bandcamp.com/
F-Units have created their own personal brand of punk-influenced hard rock and get their name from diesel engine locomotives built by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division in the 1940s and 50s — a metaphor for the band’s sound — “hard, fast, loud… fueled by power-pop hooks and raunch-rock riffs slammed together with the heavy driving force of a runaway freight train.” More info on their website at http://f-units.com

Happy Sunday - my favorite day of the week. A glass of wine, some music playing on the Jukebox, a game of Pinball - life is good. Opened this one up to breathe and had to take a sip. It's a 2012 Bogle Phantom Red Blend. A bit of a splurge, but I'm celebrating 6 years of the show this week, so why not!
This wine is a blend of 46% Petite Syrah, 40% Zinfandel, 11% Cabernet Sauvingnon and 3% Mouvedre. A deep purple in the glass with a dark red rim, it is a visual delight. On the nose, a bit of Dark Chocolate, Leather and Black Black Fruit. On the tongue, the flavors intensify with more fruit and a nice astringency, some acidity on the smooth finish with a Blackberry Bomb left in the throat. Wow! This is gonna go well with the Rib Eyes on the grill and equally well with the Dandelion Chocolate for dessert. If you have never had Choclate from this shop down in the Mission in San Francisco, you need to right now - they take orders online. My favorite is the Kikoa Kamila bar made from beans grown in Tanzania. Just Beans and Sugar - that is all!

After an evening rain last night, the air is fresh and the sunlight just a bit brighter. Fall is here - perfect time for a nice hearty Ale. I packed my checked luggage a few weeks ago with one of these bombers and it is time to crack it open. The brewery is the NoLi Brewery in Spokane, Washington and it's called a Spin Cycle Red Ale. Brewed in the style of an English ESB, this beer is big and bold when it comes to malts. Fresh grain goodness with a nice bread nose and some great caramel and toasted notes from the Chocolate Malts.
Highly recommended - can't wait to try some of their other beers.

Enjoyed a wonderful Cabernet / Syrah blend last night - went well with the Tri-Tip and perfect with the Chocolate Cake for desert. The wine is called the Creator and it is vinified by K Vintners up in Walla Walla, Washington. Picked this up on my latest trip up to the Great Pacific Northwest. Had the pleasure of traveling up the Columbia River from Portland to Walla Walla - what a beautiful Gorge - truly a place to behold.
The wine pours an inky purple and smells like a bouquet of red fruit with just a hint of vanilla. On the tongue, nice structure with soft tannins and a great body. The alcohol is just right at 14.5%. So glad I stopped in again at the tasting room in Downtown Walla Walla and work my way through the list - highly recommended - both to visit the tasting room and to purchase this wine.
Cheers,
