Here we are with another new release episode. Just over two hours of brand new tunes that everybody should check out. A little bit of garage rock, quite a bit of power pop, and a few other genres mixed in for fun.
As for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”, I do have a brand new entry but it’s not actually a submission. Last week, The Waco Brothers put out a fabulous new record, The Men That God Forgot, and I was thrilled to see they included their incediary take of that classic.
Of course, I have to remind you that I am still looking for submissions. Please, if possible record your own version, or put the word out to your musician friends. If you have any questions, feel free to send an email to paulisded @ gmail dot com.

Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid (1946-2023)
Show season is heating up! Got tickets to W.A.S.P., 999 and Chuck Prophet and that's just in April. None of these artists are on this month's playlist but you'll find some punk, hard rock, grunge, hip hop, alternative, thrash and soul.
As this is the last show of the first quarter of 2023, and even airing on the last day of the month, it’s only natural that we take a look back at some of the stunning new records released so far thsi year. It has been quite a year, especialy if you are a fan of guitar-driven music. Power pop, in particular, has made a great comeback this year, highlighted by the likes of The Whiffs, Local Drags, and Ryan Allen And His Extra Arms.
But it’s also a great year for returning legends. Yo La Tengo, The Long Ryders, The Church, and Iggy Pop released their best albums in years. Billy Childish reunited the legendary Thee Headcoats for their first album in 22 years, and it’s a smoker!
For this show, obviously, the main highlight comes from the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” subtheme, and we received thrilling news earlier this week. The very first person I contacted when I came up with this idea was Malibu Lou from Rum Bar Records. Obviously, I was hoping that he could convince some of his bands to participate (and I still hope they do). What I wasn’t expecting was for Lou to make the very first new submission. Weeks later, Lou uploaded his cover as a free Bandcamp single, and it’s now in rotation on SiriusXM’s Underground Garage!
As a thank you, I’m again airing Lou’s cover, but this week’s opening spot goes to The Dollyrots’ cover that was found on last year’s Down the Rabbit Hole compilation. Once again, though, I’m pleading with all listeners, musicians, labels and/or anybody else to please record their own version of the Undertones’ classic. I’d love for some more new submissions to air, and maybe it can lead to bigger things just like what happened with Malibu Lou!!! If you have any questions, please send an email to paulisded@gmail.com

This week’s show, after a 1977 Weirdos warble: brand new Flyying Colours, Robert Forster, Naked Raygun, Bitter Defeat, Reds, Pinks & Purples, OFF!, Foam Giant, and Death Cab For Cutie; plus Fats Domino, Beatles, Bee Gees, Junior Byles, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, Graham Nash, and Sandy Denny; and R.I.P. Weirdos guitarist Dix Denney (1957-2023)
Just like last week, this episode is primarily based around what I’ve been listening to in the Ledge home base over the last few days. Some of it is brand new material. Much of it has been old faves that span almost 60 years of great rock and roll.
Overall, though, this show is primarily a showcase for old and new power pop. In the new category, there are fabulous new tracks by The Whiffs, Sharp Pins, Uni Boys, and The Trouble Seekers, along with “excavated” recordings by The Bings and Popsicko.
As for old faves, it’s a history lesson of sorts. There’s The Monkees and The Kinks from the 60s. The Jam, The Flamin’ Groovies, Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, and The Rubinoos from the 70s. The 80s are represented by the likes of The Barracudas, Dwight Twilley, The Bongos, and Camper Van Beethoven. Maybe the 90s aren’t as highly represented, but there is “Tayter Country” by The Cavedogs, quite possibly my favorite song of 1980.
As for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”, this week’s version comes from The Mahones, the legendary Canadian/Irish punk band that always features a quality cover or two on each of their albums. Their version of “Teenage Kicks” is twice represented on their (mostly) live A Great Night On the Lash record. The first version is the final song of their encore, while the tune aired tonight comes from a bonus “Belfast Sessions” tacked on to the end.
Like always, I’m still out here pleading for brand new versions of “Teenage Kicks”. Please pass the word on to all of your musician friends. If you have questions, or have a submission, shoot me an email at paulisded@gmail.com
For more information, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
This week’s show, after a 1966 McCartney warble: brand new Eyelids, Black Watch, Live Skull, Lemon Twigs, Successful Failures, Peter Case, and Jim Corradi/Music Will; plus The Beatles, Larry Williams, Peter & Gordon, Shocking Blue, Rufus Thomas, Tammy Wynette, and Billie Holiday, and an interview With Jim Corradi, on singing at City Winery and Carnegie Hall this week!
This is another of those shows that really has no format. It’s pretty much a rundown of the music I’ve been listening to around the house the last couple of weeks. There’s some great reissued vinyl by Thee Headcoats, Beat Happening, Bottle Rockets, and others. There’s old faves pulled out of the stacks by the likes of Jason and the Scorchers, Hypstrz, Curtiss A, and (shockingly) The Replacements.
But I also made room for some new tunes, highlighted by the return of Minneapolis faves High on Stress with their new single, “Over/Thru”. I have no word as of this point whether it’s a sneak preview of a new full-length album, but I’m obviously hoping that’s the case. Other new tracks include tunes by Huck 2, The Downhauls, Lone Wolf, and The Tearaways.
As for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”series, I aired one of the more interesting remakes that I’ve found of this fabulous song. The story goes that at some point many years ago, former Young Ones star Adriam Edmondson “accidentally” bought a mandolin. After learning a few chords he began to play a few old punk rock faves. This led to him forming a Celtic-leaning band, The Bad Shepherds, whose albums primarily covered those same punk songs he had found himself learning on his new instrument. So in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I felt it a perfect time to air The Bad Shepherds’ “Humours of Tullah/Teenage Kicks/Whiskey In the Jar/The Merry Blacksmith” medley.
Again, I’m putting out a request to all musicians and wannabe musicians to submit your own version of “Teenage Kicks”. If you have any questions, or have a version ready for me, contact me at paulisded@gmail.com

This week’s show, after a 2002 Electric Soft Parade warble: brand new Killing Joke, Gaz Coombes, Successful Failures, Susanna Hoffs, National Honor Society, New Pornographers, Robert Forster, and Sleaford Mods (with Perry Ferrell); plus Mamas & the Papas, Dennis Wilson, Bert Jansch, Badfinger, Big Joe Turner, David Crosby & Graham Nash, Willi Williams, and Webb Pierce
The Oblivians- Call The Police
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion- Ghetto
Ghetto Ways- Camaro Creep
Born Liars- She Does It Right
Bohannons- Sense It Out
Krayolas- Pleasant Valley Sunday
Muck & The Mires- Break It All
Dex Romweber- Good This Going
Messerschmitt- Snowflake
Highway 61- Stranger
The Horse Heads- Ur Boi
John Paul Keith- Leave Them Girls Alone
Kathy Lynn & The Playboys- I Got A Guy
Johnny Horton- I’m Coming Home
Hindu Love Gods- Wang Dang Doodle
Dr Feelgood- Baby Jane
Dirtbombs- Ode To A Black Man
Dynamite Platoon- I’m Rowed Out
The second part of this month’s new release series sees no drop off from last week’s extravaganza. In fact, it makes the case that 2023 is shaping up to be yet another great year of music. There are long-awaited returns by The Reverend Horton Heat, Chickasaw Mud Puppies, Cheater Slicks, and Shonen Knife. There are great new bands such as Civic, Strange Neighbors, and The Circulators. There’s some punk. There’s some power pop. There’s some indie rock. Yep, just like normal.
This week’s entry for the 52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks series is a version that was released in 2022. The Knee-Hi’s are a great Chicago based band whose album, Charmed, is described on their site as “a living love letter to rock ‘n’ roll, serving up a mixture of rock, punk, glam, power pop, garage and doo-wop”. Sounds like a Ledge band, right?
Once again I’m pleading for anybody out there to send in their own versions. I want as many new covers as possible! All you have to do is record it and forward it to paulisded@gmail.com.

March 8th, 2023. Tommy Unit LIVE!! #573 – TONIGHT…..A sneak peek into the new Daddy Long Legs rekkid! Plus some killer Go-Gos cover in recognition of International Women’s Day….Some local tracks….a five song/Viva Las Vegas/Rum Bar Records set….and more!!!!! We go LIVE!! at 10pm ET/7:00pm PT on REAL PUNK RADIO – Radio Done Right!

This week’s show, after a small snatch-a 1960 Chuck Berry: brand new Fastbacks, Chime School, Telephone Numbers, Death Cab For Cutie, Salim Nourallah (with Marty Willson-Piper), Belle & Sebastian, and Graham Nash; plus The Beatles, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Marvin Gaye, Action, Pioneers, and Huey ‘Piano’ Smith & His Clowns (R.I.P.)
Once again, there is so much great new music coming out that this month’s new release show is forced to be split into two separate episodes. Tonight’s first part not only features the usual great tunes from labels such as Rum Bar Records and Big Stir Records, but is highlighted by an extended set from a record that will undoubtedly end up towards the top of my best records list at the end of the year.
That record is the latest by The Whiffs, Scrach ‘n’ Sniff. Simply put, this is everything that I love about power pop. The pop hooks are certainly there, but it’s the “power” portion of their sound that sets them apart from almost everyboyd else in that subgenre. They aren’t just a power pop band. They’re a solid rock and roll band. I hope you love them as much as I do.
I’m also pleased to have a set of local music this month. Yes, Sioux Falls, South Dakota does have a music scene, and tonight’s show features new music by Winter Hell, Thought Patrol, and Merry Martial. Please check out their bandcamp sites!
And, of course, there’s also this week’s edition of “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”. I have a great new rendition by Iowa City’s Blast Choir, who just a few weeks ago sent me their killer “The B.C. EP“. Thank you, my friends, for your submission, and once again I’m pleading for anybody out there to send in their own versions. I want as many new covers as possible! Send them to paulisded@gmail.com.

Ever since Honningbarna appeared on Turbojugend Radio in 2014, we´re hooked on the energetic, angry, fresh, unpredictable, uncontrollable, no-holds-barred – you get it – attitude of young Norwegian bands.
B. Engel and Tschebesta grabbed a mic and interviewed the young chaps trying to figure out WHY and HOW Norway always seem to come up with super-unique, kick-arse music that moves the living sh*!t out of us. Me talast!
Saw Henry Rollins here in town last night do more than 2 hours of spoken word gold. Don't miss out if he's coming to a city near you! In other news my daughter has started to buy records and that is putting a SERIOUS dent in my wallet... On this month's playlist you'll find some punk, garage, hard rock, rhythm & blues, psychobilly and thrash.
This week’s show, after a 1958 Huey “Piano” Smith tribute: brand new Lovejoy, Dot Dash, Black Watch, Eyelids, Shana Cleveland, Field School, Guided By Voices and an Autodidact Dreams world premier; plus Beatles, Temptations, Manfred Mann, Kinks, Paul Revere & the Raiders, June Carter, and Winston Samuels; and R.I.P. Huey “Piano” Smith (1934-2023)
It’s always shocking when you stumble upon tweets or articles noting the anniversary of beloved albums. You can’t help but wonder how something that seems like it came out yesterday is actually…well, old!
That’s the case with tonight’s show. Every single song you hear is 25 years old. It’s just insane to me that some of my favorite Americana (Son Volt, Golden Smog, Drive-By Truckers), power pop (Sloan, Tommy Keene, Nada Surf), singer/songwriter (Elliott Smith, Silver Jews), and punk (Fugazi, Screeching Weasel, Bad Religion) records have hit this milestone. It just doesn’t feel like nostalgia
As for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” entry, I’ve got a fabulous rarity. 1998 saw the release of Scandal Controvery and Romance, the classic debut record by The Prissteens. To celebrate the 45th birthday of their A&R rep, Howard Thompson, the pressed up 45 copies of a tribute song called “Oh Howard!”. The b-side of this single was their Undertones cover that featured a few lyrical changes and retitled “Teenage Dicks”. (Both of these tracks were eventually reissued on 2020’s The Hound collection of rarities and demos.)
Once again, I’m always actively looking for new covers of “Teenage Kicks”. Please don’t hesitate to create your own personal spin on one of the greatest songs of all time. Contact me at paulisded@gmail.com if you have a version to submit or if you have any questions regarding this project.

This week’s show is once again a mix of old and new. There’s quite a few brand new releases highlighted, accompanied by quite a few records that I’ve found myself playing in my free time.
Which leads me to a question to my lovely listeners. For as long as I’ve done the show, the presence of “themes” has been a constant. Honestly, that’s how my brain works best for picking music. It gives me a reason to air a tune. Even the monthly new release episode is basically a theme that’s just like shows based on certain years or terms.
Lately, I have sort of abandoned the theme and played these kinds of old/new mixes. Part of this is that due to the fact that I now report a top ten playlist every week to the Radio Indie Alliance. I know I can submit any ten tracks I play but I’ve been paying even more attention to new music than usual.
So this is what I want to find out from you guys. Do you like these freeform type of broadcasts or should I revert back to having a weekly theme? The themes aren’t going away entirely, no matter what anybody says. But should they become a monthly occurrence just like the new release show? Let me know by commenting on this post, or contacting me on the various social media platforms. Oh, and I need ideas on what to title these shows!
As for this week’s edition of the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”, I’ve got a nice little surprise from Rum Bar Records artist Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents. Jenny’s version came out in 2013 as the b-side to her single, “Getaway”, and the 50s pop/rock feel is a refreshing take on the punk classic. Thank you Jenny Dee!!!

Burt Bacharach (1928-2023)

It’s no surprise that Los Angeles rock band Palms Station has a spiritual quality to their music: multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Hillel Tigay is also a cantor and musical director at IKAR, one of the largest and most influential progressive synagogues in Southern California.
bdrmm’s new single, “It’s Just a Bit of Blood” meanders and surges with epic dream pop— and shoegaze—drenched results. Now we have to wait til June 30th for the LP, “I Don’t Know”.
After a couple of EPs, Dry Cleaning made their mark with 2021’s New Long Leg and “Scratchcard Lanyard” in particular showcasing the band’s unique mix of a propulsive rhythm section, inventive guitar and most of all, Florence Shaw’s deadpan, spoken word vocals. She’s not a singer in the conventional sense, but rather is a portal into a wildly surreal world of smashed pottery, Nordic coiffures and discharging of military grade weapons. Somewhere, Don Van Vliet looks down and smiles.
Last year’s Stumpwork is a continuation of their sound, complementary rather than revolutionary. The artwork definitely raised a few eyebrows, with “Stumpwork” spelled out across a bar of soap the color of pale flesh, using wayward pubic hairs curled into letters. Love it or hate it, at least it’s not boring and the design team certainly hit their mark.
Once again we have a show devoted primarily to material I’ve been listening to around the house. Honestly, since it was announced that Television’s Tom Verlaine had passed away on January 28, 2023, I have wanted to do a little tribute to him on The Ledge. So tonight you can hear a handful of his classic Television and solo tunes. RIP.
There’s also a wide variety of tunes that comprise almost 60 years of rock and roll. There’s a handful of garage rock classics from the acclaimed Pebbles series. There’s a track from one of Robert Gordon’s collaborations with guitarist Link Wray. There’s also a sort of tribute to Burt Bachrach in the form of a Stranglers cover that somehow caught my ear a day or so before the announcement of his death.
And there’s also a couple of sets of new tunes, primarily songs that were cut from last week’s new release episode, along with more cuts from recent Rum Bar Records releases. I’ve also premiered the newly reissued single from Popsicko on Big Stir Records, which was officially released today. (Look for a full album later this spring).
Don’t think that I’ve forgotten about my yearlong sub-theme, “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”. This week’s submission is from a great friend who has not only been a Ledge listener for over a decade but he’s a bigtime supporter of RealPunkRadio in general. Kingbubbatruck, aka Brent Dowell, sent the show a fabulous, slowed-down version that is perfection. Thank you, Brent.
Speaking of the Teenage Kicks theme, I was given the opportunity to be a guest writer on S.W. Lauden’s Remember the Lightning substack. The piece was publsihed this past Thursday, so please go give it a read here! Thank you, sir, for the opportunity!

While Hamish Hawk is known first and foremost as a musician, this discussion about topics ranging from favorite coffee cups to listening to CDs in the car positions Hawk as a great conversationalist as well.
The guitarist plugs his instrument into synthesizers and boards of electronics, creating a fascinating series of soundscapes that seem to have dropped in from another reality entirely
What a glorious pairing this night was of two British bands whose careers spanned similar timelines and who released and featured albums from the early 1990s that one can still feel both nostalgic about and savor the listening experience today. Both bands showcased a pivotal album from their early career but still managed to delve into some additional stand out tracks afterwards. Ultimately, both bands are far from calling it quits and still have the energizing songs and stage presence to make seeing and listening a wholeheartedly rewarding experience.
The Charlatans entered the stage with lead singer Timothy Burgess taking pictures of the audience and acting from the start as if they were having the time of their life while playing their 1992 album Between 10th and 11th. The crowd relished in the memorable tracks and the way Burgess danced around the stage with a similar youthful glee he may have exhibited 30 years ago. He had a truly infectious energy throughout their set! The audience especially enjoyed their timeless hit “Tremelo Song” and joined in singing along to “Can’t Even Be Bothered” but the momentum was even more heightened with the super catchy “Weirdo.” In retrospect, it felt like every one of these remarkable tracks were singles as they seem both instantly recognizable and immensely pleasurable to listen to. The power of the keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums to accompany Burgess’s vocals definitely heightened the anthemic quality and buoyant mood.
Charlatans didn’t leave the audience after “You’re So Pretty,” either. Like Ride, they followed up their main set with a fantastic mini second set of other songs including “Just When You’re Thinkin’ Things Over” from their 1995 self titled album as well as “One to Another” from 1997’s Tellin’ Stories but perhaps the happiest climactic moment was during “The Only One I Know” from 1990’s Some Friendly. It was another 90 minute set that left us with so much to cherish and felt like it went by far too quickly but then again, a night like this begs the question: What is time anyway?
Pianist Fred Hersch is revered for his compositional, improvisational and technical talents, a jazz musician’s jazz musician. Singer/bassist/songwriter Esperanza Spalding has used her massive talent to bridge the worlds of jazz and, well, everything else.
Paige Su traces life-journey from darkness and the specter of death to lightness, acceptance and – above all – love on “You’ll Live Forever in My Songs”.
This week’s show, after a 1986 Billy Bragg refrain (for Barrett Strong): brand new Gaz Coombes, Sloan, Green Pajamas, Nyte Skye, Iggy Pop, Dot Dash, and Stargazer Lillies; plus Billy Preston, Ray Charles, Upsetters, Tom Lerher, Dovers, Bobby Helms, and Byrds; and R.I.P. Barrett Strong (1941-2023), Tom Verlaine (1949-2023), and David Crosby (1941-2023)
As well as being a bandleader in his own right, bassist Ander Jormin anchors the long-running Bobo Stenson Trio. Singer, songwriter and violinist Lean Willamark has joined her fellow Swede on numerous occasions, co-leading a quartet with koto player Karin Nakagawa and Jormin’s Stenson Trio rhythm partner, drummer Jon Fält.
Tropical Fuck Storm’s Gaz Liddiard discusses the Australian band’s latest covers EP, checking out free jazz cassettes from the library, and bassist Fiona Kitschin’s recent breast cancer diagnosis.
Shelkett’s career in the Baltimore emo scene goes back 30 years, having fronted and released albums with Blank, Cross My Heart, Dead Red Sea, and Liars Academy; this debut solo LP was produced by hardcore/punk vet J. Robbins.
Hammock and The Reds, Pinks, and Purples have each recently released music around the theme of “the void.” Hammock writes of “love in the void” while RPP sings of “life in the void.” With uncannily similar themes from music released just a few days apart, the results are outstanding and dramatically different. Dive in.
Everybody knows the drill by now. The first Friday of the month means it’s new release night at The Ledge headquarters (aka my bedroom). Somewhat weirdly, though, is that this February episode is technically the first new release show of the year. But that’s due to the Teenage Kicks subtheme necessitating a December 30 airing of the January new release show. Make sense?
Speaking of “Teenage Kicks”, I’m so happy that this week’s submission is by Sixgun Republic leader Christopher Chancey! He’s got sort of a rockabilly vibe going through his little version, and I love the use of a piano! Chancey also submitted an old cover of “Sonic Reducer” his band put out back in 2007. Thanks Christopher!!!
Do you have a version of this seminal tune to submit? Do you have a little bit of time you can set aside to record a track to air? Please submit it to me! I’m so blown away by the reaction to “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”! A few bands have already promised to forward a submission in the near future, but the more versions the better! If you have any questions, please contact me at paulisded@gmail.com

Jenn Howard is releasing her new album (first in 14 years) on March 3rd, via New Orleans’ Bathtub Music. Her first single, “Microphone”, features a guest vocal from NOLA royalty, Ivan Neville.
Her rich voice and intimate lyrics evoke a 1970s flower-child spirit with a fresh layer of uplifting pop. Comparisons to Jennifer Harper’s motivational music include Carly Simon, Carole King and Sarah McLachlan.
After listening to even a few of Harper’s missives, it’s all too easy to fall in love with her contemplative, assured artistry. That’s especially apparent on her second album, Change Is Coming, which Harper is currently supporting.
This live set captures a summit meeting of iconoclastic musicians as it happened nearly 30 years ago at the famed and influential Montreaux Jazz Festival. The concert predates and foreshadows a classic album for fans of ’90s fusion.
The Candle and the Flame, the eight solo album from former Go-Betweens co-leader Robert Forster, was made under trying circumstances: Forster’s wife Karin was battling ovarian cancer.

A bassist and composer of some twenty-five years’ standing, Ben Wolfe has attracted as much acclaim for his compositions as for his playing, with a career in chamber music alongside his jazz work.

Every now and then it’s nice to have a show without any real theme, and that’s what we have tonight. Instead, it’s really just a collection of records I’ve been listening to over the last few weeks, and interesting collection of various genres that represent over 50 years of great rock and roll. There’s a handful of recent releases side by side with all time classics. There are veteran bands that are brand new to me, and relatively new artists that I’ve been obsessed with over the last few months.
Of course, there’s also this week’s selection for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” subtheme. I’ve got a homegrown talent by the name of Link West, and his mainly acoustic version is a really nice change of pace. He also contributed a little piece of spoken word audio where he talks of his love of the song and his history of playing it in his original band in Columbus, Ohio. He describes the tune as “50% bubblegum, 50% booty call”. I can’t argue with that.
Link West’s version marks a run of (at least) three straight weeks of listener contributions, but of course I always want more. Nothing would make me happier than an entire year of brand new versions of one of my favorite songs of all time. If you don’t have the capabilities to record your own cover, please reach out to any musician friends to contribute their version. If you have any questions, or if you have a version set to go, please contact me at paulisded@gmail.com
