Greetings on this fine Sunday afternoon. I've popped open a fine combination of Sacramento's premier brewing and coffee roasting collaborations called The Sauce. The beer is a fine American Porter from Ruhstaller and the coffee is a very special one from the Old Soul Coffee Company. Brewed with beans sourced from Panama's Los Lajones Estate, the coffee is infused into the Porter in this wonderful beer, limited to just 230 cases. How does it taste, you ask? Well, the subtle malts and hops give way to a burst of fresh roasted coffee smell and taste. Throw away your mimosas next Sunday's brunch and pour one of these! Highly recommended.

A nice spring Sunday afternoon, a bit of a chill in the air - no need to worry - I've cracked open a bottle of Sobon Estate 2011 Rocky Top Zinfandel to keep me warm. A wonderful expression of the Zinfandel produced in the Amador County - nice soft nose full of red ripe fruit and a velvety smooth finish that is going to pair well with Bolognese sauce that I have bubbling in the kitchen.

Happy Easter! I've recovered from the Food Coma that Easter Brunch entails and elected to crack open a nice IPA from the kind folks over at the Sierra Nevada Brewery. This one was contained in the "4-way IPA 12 pack" that Sierra Nevada put together this year. Along with the beer that I cracked open (Nooner IPA) the 12 pack contained 4 each of the Snow Wit, Black and Torpedo IPA's. This one was my favorite - even over the Torpedo which I love.
There is something contained in either the hops or the yeast that gives this beer a gentle spiciness that is wonderful. Hard to describe, but it is a bit of cinnamon or allspice character that takes this beer over the top for me - great stuff!

Warming up out here on the Left Coast and I've got a great beer to go with the increasing temperatures. This is the second of the beers that I smuggled back from Montreal. The beer is No. 926 from the Les Brasseurs R.J. brewery. This one is categorized as a Belgian Pale Ale.
Pours a really hazy orange with just a bit of a head on it. Aromas of banana and cloves hit the nose immediately. On the tongue, oranges predominate and the beer has a wonderful tartness to it. Loving this one!
Other Belgian Pale Ales include Orval Trappist and Leffe Blonde. The No. 926 is fairly clean without the funkiness of those 2 beers. Not many hops in this one, with some great malt sweetness - a pleasant change from the double and triple IPA madness. I'd recommend this one if you are near the brewery.

Heating up out here on the Left Coast, but I've got a cold Dopplebock from a very cold locale to chill out with. This Dopplebock is from the Montreal brewery Brasseurs R.J. A nice clear dark amber color and a nice frothy head. Lotsa caramel flavor with only a bit of hops, strictly staying true to the dopplebock style. The only complaint I have is that the beer is pretty ordinary not much depth of flavor. But hey, I finished it!

A glorious Sunny Sunday here and I have a nice French Red open to let my Sunday afternoon slide into evening. A pot of Bolognese sauce is bubbling on the stovetop and should pair well with some toothsome Linguini and a vegetable Ratatouille. This French Red is from the Chateau Moulin De Sales and consists of 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 60% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. A classic Bordeaux, this a tannin monster. High acidity and very little extracted fruit make this one a classic, very dissimilar in comparison with a California red. Similar to the Ale I reviewed last week in comparison to a West Coast IPA. The styles are so different and each has it's fans. I have to say that I am not a fan of the French style, but this one is at least drinkable.
Chateau Moulin De Sales is in the Pomerol region of Bordeaux (# 14 on the map below) on the "Left Bank", a region famous for Chateau Petrus. This one is obviously not as famous and I found it down at my local Trader Joes for around 12 smackers.

The Landlord is poured and the games have begun! After hearing about this beer on one of my favorite podcasts - Greg Lonesome's Rock N' Roll Manifesto, I decided to track down the Landlord by Timothy Taylor Brewery. So glad I did - classic English Ale. Clear Toffee Caramel color with a bit of a head and some savory aromas of buttered toast with a bit of earthy hops greet the nose. The taste is wonderfully balanced and a direct opposite of the heavy fruity IPAs that I have been enjoying recently. I have to say it is a pleasant break and at 4.1% alcohol, I wish I had purchased another. Alas, when I bought this one last weekend at the local Beer Shoppe, it was their last one. Another shipment is due soon and I've learned that Bevmo might carry it locally. Good News!

Uncorked a nice Petite Sirah this dreary overcast afternoon to spice up the day. Lotsa spice and blackbery bramble flavors highlight this great wine from the folks at Bogle Vineyards. I loved the 2008 vintage back in 2010
(Bogle Petite Sirah and some Trouble In Mind 7"). This one is just as good, maybe even better. Bogle has some great wines for $10 and under, including this one. Should go well with the Tri-Tip on the grill this evening. Cheers!

Cold and a bit grey out today - perfect day to retire to the confines of the Pinhead Studios for some Pinball and IPA. I've got the extra ball lit, 2 balls to play and 2406 points, but took a break to take a couple of photos of my second Ruination of the afternoon. Looks like the 8.2% alcohol level is working it's way through my blood system as I forgot to turn the bottle so you can see the label! That label is one of those painted on labels that I love - get it cold and it doesn't affect it. Great choice of colors on the labels too- love the green and gold on the amber bottle. Stone just does everything well - including the beer. Really nice head that deflates into soft ridges and peaks of foam. A very nice malt base with a killer selection of hops that make this one a true "Palate Wrecker". One of Stone's best in my humble opinion.

Opened up a 2012 Bogle Phantom last evening to go with the Tri-Tip that I threw on the BBQ. Just finishing up the last few glasses this afternoon while I tend the BBQ once again for Chicken Breasts (for salads later this week) and Pork Chops (for tonight's dinner).
This red is comprised of Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Old Vine Mourvedre and is aged in American Oak for 2 years. Great notes of dark red fruit and a superb backbone of Cigar and Cedar make this a wonderful blend. I've loved the winery's Essential Red and a reader (Jim) recommended that I step up to the "Big Brother" of that wine, the Phantom. I am glad that he did! This one goes for just under $20 and is well worth it.

A beautiful day out here in California - should hit around 64 degrees - strange for mid February. Nevertheless, I've retreated to the Pinhead Studios for a bit of Pinball and Stout. Opened up a Samuel Smith Organic Chocolate Stout this afternoon to go with a game of Target Pool. Really intense Milk Chocolate flavors in this one. I love their Oatmeal Stout - I call it a Meal in a Bottle as it is nice and hearty. This one is Dessert in a Bottle. In fact, I'll be corking up the remainder to have after dinner with some leftover Valentines Day chocolates. Highly recommended if you are in the mood for a Sweet Stout.

A Rainy Sunday here today - time to stay in and enjoy a hearty Argentinian Red. This one is from the Saint Julia Winery and is a 2012 blend of Tempranillo and Malbec. Now, I enjoyed the winery's Malbec back in November of 2012 and have been itching to try more from the winery located in the Mendoza region of Argentina.
This blend is really interesting - lotsa blackberry notes from the Tempranillo and a nice backbone of smokiness from the Malbec. The winemakers used a very light hand in the aging of the wine - not much oak which brings out a nice freshness to the wine. I'll be going back to my local Whole Foods to try the rest of the Red Innovacion wines - I believe they have a few more interesting blends to try. Very reasonable priced at around a tenner for the 1 Liter bottle.
Below is a video from the winery recommending some tasty looking tapas to go with the wine - me? - not so fancy - just a nice hearty Lasagna last night and leftovers tonight. What is is about Lasagna that it tastes better the next day? - continued blending of the flavors, I'm thinkin'.

A glorious afternoon out here on the Left Coast - almost a shame to adjourn to the dark depths of the pinhead studios to play some Palooka and try out the beer that I smuggled home from Portland a few weeks ago. This one is from the Ninkasi brewery in Eugene Oregon. I have never been disappointed with a beer from the brewery and this one keeps the streak alive. Wonderful aromas and hop flavors from the Mosaic hops used in the beer. I think I might be smelling Peach and most definitely Mango. Love this beer that is hazy as hell - maybe what brewers refer to as "Hop Haze". Not sure but I'm thinking so. It does not detract from the wonderful flavors of the hops and malts. Excellent Red Ale! Gonna give it five stars on the ole Untapped.
