Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine - that is all I need - oh yeah - and some music. All about cards tonight with some Westerberg, Aerosmith, Motorhead and Queen. Cheers!
A wonderful weekend out here on the Left Coast. Highs in the upper 60's and sunny - no, there is no global warming, so go bury your head back in the sand.....
Uncorked a gift that I had received over the Holiday Season, a 2009 Goosecross Cellars State Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark as night in the glass with just a faint purple hue. Inhaling the aromas coming from this one is just heaven. Dark spices and oak notes put to mind a dark night in the vineyards. The taste is heavenly too. Five years in the bottle has softened the tannins just enough to leave a bit of astringency, yet highlight the wonderful Cabernet fruit. So many Napa Valley Cabs are opened soon after bottling and have an overpowering tannin profile. Not this Cab.
The wine will go nicely with the grilled pork tenderloins and homemade ratatouille that I've whipped up for the evening. Just a bit of garlic salt and pepper on the tenderloin and basil and whole cloves of garlic for the ratatouille. Don't want to overpower the wine. A hint for those ratatouille lovers out there - use the whole peeled clove and after the roasting process smash it around a bit to spread the Vampire Resistance to the entire dish.

It is a fine Saturday afternoon out here on the Left Coast. In case you are wondering, I'm recording the show on a Saturday night, as I have a date to watch the NFL's finest tomorrow evening. Go Niners! Ok - back to the beer. I've cracked open a can of the Maui Brewing company Coconut Porter, This one is black as night with a nice 2 finger head. Aromas of Chocolate, Coffee and Coconut (of course) abound and the taste - well - it's a bit like an malty Mounds Bar to tell you the truth. I'm loving it and the second one will be saved to go with the homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies my oldest daughter is whipping up tonite. We will be watching Lilo and Stitch a bit later - not my favorite movie. Alas, she and a group of friends are heading out to Hawaii tomorrow for a week of sun and fun, thus the choice - wish I was going.....

Original air date on Thumbin Radio – Friday, January 3, 2014. The first show of 2014. Sorry for the delay! No classic country this time around, only newer artists playing in the traditional style.
Some tributes to Jay Reatard, Jerry Nolan, Johnny Cash, two sets of tracks from Stikman Records, a devastatingly fresh Beer Minute and lots of other great stuff.
Rumors, Lies, Innuendo - yes we deal with them on a daily basis. This show deals with it as well - in it's musical form - plus a tribute to Graham Parker in the Vinyl section of the show.
Uncorked a Sonoma County Zinfandel this afternoon to go with a homemade pizza we are whipping up for dinner. This is the Seghesio Family Vineyards 2011 Sonoma County Zinfandel sourced from some of the oldest vineyards in the county. Seghesio has been growing grapes near Healdsburg for over 100 years and have a breadth of knowledge and experience that leads to some great wines, including this one.
The first thing that strikes me when tasting this wine is the smoothness. Nice dark fruits and vanilla on the nose and then the taste buds explode with blackberry and plum flavors during the first sip. Nice dry finish with a trace of oak on the back end. Very well put together wine that ranks up there at the top of my favorite Zins.

It's a fine Saturday evening out here on the Left Coast and I have a fine Winter Ale that is going down great. Spent my Friday up in Portland but was back late last night - it is nice to be home! I picked up a few souvenirs on my trip though - including the 22 oz craftbrew that you see above. The brewery is Oakshire, which is located in Eugene Oregon, a bit east and south of Portland. I've had the Overcast Expresso Stout from the brewery and it was very nice, so I thought I would pick up their Winter Ale. This is called the Ill Tempered Gnome - great name!
Let's see, the website calls out 65 IBU, 6.8 % ABV and 15.5 Plato, but hey, I'm no Philosopher.... I have to say that the Overcast was a wee bit better, as this American Brown Ale is lacking a bit in my humble opinion. Not to say that I am not enjoying it, but I have had some better Seasonal Brown Ales before (love the Anderson Valley Winter Solstice Ale). The Gnome has a nice dark amber color and a wisp of a head. Nice roasted malt flavors (brown sugar, chocolate and toffee). Saving the second half of the bomber for dinner to go with some grilled Salmon and fingerling potatoes.
January 1, 2014. Happy New Year! With tonight’s show falling on New Year’s Day, it only seems fitting to take a look at some of my favorite songs that rocked 2013! Turn it up! Tommy Unit LIVE!! Wednesday at 10:00pm ET/7:00pm PT on REAL PUNK RADIO – Radio Done Right!

After a week off, which was a week too long, the Manifesto returns with some great tunes and news of the first ever Rock N Roll Manifesto free download compilation, “If Your Record Collection Still Sucks, it’s REALLY Not My … Continue reading →
For over 3 and a half years the Rock N Roll Manifesto has become known for bringing quality rock n roll, punk rock, hardcore, psychobilly and more to you on a weekly basis.
Now, for the first time ever, Greg Lonesome has rounded up some of the killer bands he plays on the Manifesto and put together a free download compilation.
Greg Lonesome’s sign off for the Rock N Roll Manifesto for quite a long time has been, “…if your record collection sucks, it’s not my fault.” It seemed only fitting, then, that the compilation be titled, “If Your Record Collection Still Sucks, it’s REALLY Not My Fault.”
Download it, crank it up and break stuff!
Cover songs - Interpretations, adaptations, reconstructions, deconstructions, translations, variants, rendtitions, versions with discoursions - hey you get the picture. Got some tonight from the likes of Motorcycle Boy, Flamin' Groovies, The Epoxies and Joan Jett.

Sunny and mild out here on the Left Coast - is is really almost January? - hard to tell as it has been a dry December. Got a nice and Sunny brew poured to sample tonight - a New Belgium Trippel. Received this as a gift, along with 5 other assorted beers as part of one of those sampler 6 packs that you can put together at World Market. Others included were an Acme Pale Ale, Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Anchor Liberty, Stone Ruination and Deschutes Mirror Pond - quite a nice gift. The one beer that intrigued me was the sixth beer - the Trippel. This is a beer that I never would have picked out myself, as it proudly proclaims on the label that it is brewed with Coriander. Really? Sounds rather nasty - boy was I surprised!
The beer poured a nice Sunny amber with a very small head that bubbled away quickly. Wonderful malty goodness in the nose with no hint of the Coriander. The taste is wonderful and the Coriander is very very subtle, giving the beer a mysterious complexity that is leaving me with a strange desire to go pick up a six pack of the beer.
It's Christmas Time at the Pinhead Studios. Getting that green and red vinyl out and spinning!
Here's the Playlist: Father Christmas (Christmas Concert 1977) Kinks The Kinks At The BBC A Merry Jingle The Greedies A Merry Jingle 7" You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch The Replacements 1984-12-16: Trenton City Gardens, Trenton, NJ
Only 3 more days til Christmas - better get started on my shopping..... A little Mourvedre will get me in the mood, I'm thinking. This one is a Christmas present from a friend who purchased it at the winery in Ione, California. Ione is just south of Plymouth in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California. The area is well known for the wonderful Zinfandels that are grown in the region and I have to say that I have never had a Mourvedre from the area.
This one is a nice dark red in the glass with wonderful Butterscotch and Oak notes in the nose. Smooth and silky mouthfeel, with wonderful Raspberry notes - hmm - even getting a hint of some sort of nutty character.
Very nice wine that has been vinified with great care. I'll have to take a visit there next time I head up to the foothills - great wine.

To Beat of Not To Beat - that is the question. I've got the answer for you tonight from The Beat, The English Beat, The Muffs, Blondie and the Organ Beats, to name a few.
Greeting and Salutations on this fine Sunday out here on the Left Coast. A bit nippy, but have no fear, I have a fine Ale to keep me warm. That and the heat given off by the games in the Pinhead Studio. This is the 32nd year that the Sierra Nevada Brewery has brewed up this IPA, yep started it all in 1981. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the very first West Coast IPA - you know that beer championed by the beard wearing, hop loving, ale nazis (not to be confused with the soup nazis) that were born around 1981.
This year's Celebration keeps the flame alive with a great Copper / Cedar color and a creamy white head with lots of those peaks and valleys I love. Lotsa lacing on the glass - a nice etched Sierra Nevada Imperial Pint Glass that I picked up at the Brewery in Chico a few months ago. You can get one too over here:
Sierra Nevada Imperial Pint Glass ----- only $3.50

Greetings on this Post-Thanksgiving Saturday. I hope everyone in the US had a great Turkey Day and a fine Food Coma Day (the Friday after.....). I had the traditional Friday after turkey day breakfast - yes, Pumpkin Pie.
I've unscrewed the cap on a Spanish Red this evening to go with the Turkey leftovers. This one is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot. I'm getting lotsa Merlot and a good bit of residual sugar. That is making for a very smooth wine. Some nice berry flavors and a bit of spice - yes this one should go well with the Turkey.

Time to get on the Voodoo, Silver, Boogie, Rudeboy, Mystery, Rock and Roll Train. We are heading out of the station soon, so grab a bunk, order up a few drinks and relax. Next stop, Pinhead Studios.
Greetings on this sunny Sunday afternoon. In the low sixties out here on the left coast - a wonderful day. Picked up a local brew earlier in the week and cracked it open this afternoon.
Nice dark orange color with a 2 finger white head, this beer is big and bold. 10% ABV and 168 IBU - yes a real palate wrecker! This one has the four "C" hops - Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Columbus. As the website says " Tangle with the Big 4 at your own peril. This one kinda reminds me of the Double Arrogant Bastard from the Stone Brewing company.
Check out the bottle opener that I received in the mail today. Turns out it is a memory stick also and contains the latest Tanked album called Drink Up!

Time for a little Pinball and Brew this afternoon. I've got a Clown Shoes Galactica IPA cracked open to help me slay the silver ball. Bought this a few weeks ago and have been working my way through the 4 pack. Interesting character to the beer due to the use of the Galaxy hops. Lotsa citrus notes and a sort of dankness due to the dry hopping. Enjoyable, but I'm afraid I won't be back to buy more. Now, I will be selecting something else from the brand at some point. I almost said brewery, but alas Clown Shoes is one of those contract brands who use an established brewery (in this case Ipswitch Brewing) to brew and bottle their beer. Back to the Silverball!

I didn't take any chances with corked wine tonight as I chose a wine with a screwcap. I wanted to make sure I could enjoy the wine and not have to dump it down the drain. I've got a 2011 Painter Bridge Zinfandel from the J Lohr Winery. The grapes are sourced from the Paso Robles area of California. If you have ever seen the movie Sideways, you have seen the area. Situated half way between San Fransisco and Los Angeles and near the coast, the area has a great climate for producing really good Pinot Noirs. It appears that the Zinfandels grown in that area are pretty nice too, if this one is represents the area. Strange that the Winery chose to bottle this in a "Burgundy" shaped bottle, which most Pinot Noirs come in, but not Zinfandels. Interesting choice, but it is a bit appropriate as to the region the wine is from and the softer style that the Zinfandel is made in. This one is only 13.1% alcohol, as opposed to the big bold 15% Zins that I have had before. Nice hints of Oak, Pepper and Plum is gonna make this one go well with the Tri-Tip on the grill.

A wonderful fall day - hit 75 degrees out here on the left coast - yes, put the shorts back on for a day..... Cracking open a couple of beers that were sent to me by a kind listener of the show - Brent from the Reno, Nevada area. Seems Brent has been brewing up some goodness on his own and sent me a Blonde Ale and a Pale Ale / Amber of his to try and he threw in a local beer too. If you want to know what I think of the home brews, you will just have to listen to the show that I've been putting together this afternoon. Yes, recording on a Saturday again as I have a busy schedule tomorrow. I've been planning a trip up to the Sierra Nevada Brewery for a few months now and tomorrow is the day! Meeting up with Jake of the Jake's Inferno podcast to taste a few of the brewery's offering and go record shopping.
The beer at hand is the Ichthyosaur "Icky" IPA from the Great Basin Brewing Company located in Reno, Nevada. This one is named after the Nevada official state fossil - kinda clever methinks. This beer poured a nice hazy orange with a finger and 1/2 of a white frothy head. Nice peaks and valleys in the head, beckoning me to get my upper lip coated. The hops are nice and subdued on this IPA. I've been hit over the head a few times with the "Hopped Up IPAs" lately and this one is a bit of a change of pace - almost in the Pale Ale category - nice and drinkable. I'll be looking for more of this one on the shelves - hope it is distributed out my way....
Turbojugend Radio raises the question of "How to take proper care of your Kutte?", analyses the current state of TJ in the U.K. with Two Hawks and features the second part of the Marco Almera interview. And some Deathpunk, yeah.

1986, Atlanta, Georgia: a three piece acoustic band called Tombstone Tales forms. Before long they add a fourth member, plug in their instruments and become the Tombstones. By 1988, they had released a demo tape, “Grave Matter,” and a 7-song mini LP, “Preachin’ Prayin’ Guitar Playin’.” “Preachin’ Prayin’” achieved minor indie success, and the Tombstones shared the stage with bands such as the Stray Cats, the Ramones, the Circle Jerks and the Lords of the New Church. Unfortunately, they never released anything else, despite signing with Sony/Relativity and recording an as-of-yet-unreleased album for them, along with quite a few other recording sessions along the way. By the mid 90′s, the Tombstones were still going but were a completely different band other than Stevie, and by 1995 or 96, Stevie decided to end the Tombstones and go out on his own.
By the time I first heard the Tombstones, their reign of terror was nearly over. It was around 1995, on a “psychobilly” mix tape made by a friend of a friend. I still remember hearing “Tombstone Tales” for the first time. Their music was haunting, and it intrigued me. They somehow simultaneously fit in with the rest of the psychobilly on the tape and yet stuck out like a sore thumb. Not long after, I stumbled across the “Preachin’ Prayin’ Guitar Playin’” LP at a record convention and I was hooked. It quickly became a favorite of mine, and it also became clear to me that this was not psychobilly. It was cut from a different cloth and uniquely American. It was roots oriented, steeped in rockabilly, blues and country, but with a darkness and a punk rock attitude and fire. I loved it. The LP was dated 1988. Surely, there had to be more where this came from? I searched feverishly for more information on this band.
Back then the Internet wasn’t what it is now. Searches on the Tombstones turned up nothing. I once bought a 7″ single at a record convention by a band called the Tombstones, but to my dismay it turned out to be a completely different (and horribly inferior) band. A few years later I met up with a guy from Georgia who not only knew of and liked the Tombstones, but said he had a tape of unreleased stuff. Where do I sign up? He sent it to me and I was blown away, but the mystery only deepened. What happened to this great band? Nobody seemed to know. I continued to search the interwebs for years and came up blank.
Fast forward to 2002- The Tombstones were a huge influence on my band at the time. We had been covering the Tombstones classic, “Jailhouse Tattoo,” at our gigs and ended up recording it. To be able to release our record with the song included, we needed to somehow find out where to send a royalty check. Further frantic Internet searches in early 2003 finally turned up an article about Stevie Tombstone, whom apparently was doing solo work now. I emailed the author of the article and asked if he could put me in contact with Stevie, which he did.
You never know what you’ll get when you actually communicate with someone who’s music you admire. There’s nothing worse than when one of your musical influences turns out to be a total asshole. Thankfully, talking to Stevie was the complete opposite of that. He was nice enough to talk to me for quite a while on the phone and share the story of the Tombstones. He was very humble and seemed genuinely grateful that anyone would like one of the Tombstones songs enough to want to record and release it on their album. We’ve kept in touch ever since.
Submitted for your approval, episode #202. The subject - The Twilight Zone. This one is chock full of Halloween goodness with the Groovie Ghoulies, Iron Maiden and Chris Mars thrown in the pot and boiled up into a tasty witches brew.

Recording the Halloween episode and sampling a beer that I brought back from a trip to Portland earlier this week. This one, a Fort George Brewing Vortex IPA, came back in my checked luggage. I should have read the can as the beer is unpasteurized and needs to be refrigerated at all times. Well, it was in my bag for a couple of days and then hit the refrigerator, none the worse for wear. The brewery is in Astoria, Oregon on the banks of the Mighty Columbia River downstream from Portland and just before the waters of the river empty into the Pacific.
Nice orange color with small white floaters due to this being an unfiltered beer. So, that means that I just downed lotsa brewers yeast - yeah - my Chromium and Vitamin B - complex quota for the day has been met, as the yeast provide lotsa great stuff for your health - Cheers!
This one is 7.7% ABV and rates a 97 IBU. Nicely balanced, but with a couple of sharp notes that prevent it from being stellar. I will seek out more from the brewery if I ever get back up to Portland.
Original air date on Thumbin Radio – Friday, October 25, 2013. Dug a little deeper this week and featured some more obscure artists. [to_like id="2147"][/to_like]

Posting this on a Saturday, as I'll be winging my way up to Portland for a short trip tomorrow afternoon. Working on the podcast this afternoon as well, so expect it to be released tomorrow morning.
One word for this wine - Corked! Ya know, I was looking forward to a red from Portugal and this one looked promising sitting on the shelf at Trader Joe's. This one was so corked, I couldn't even get an idea of the grape, a varietal that I have never tried before. Too bad.
