2011 Evening Land Vineyards Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
A beautiful evening out tonight and I have a wonderful Evening Land Vineyards 2011 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir open this evening. Another wine I picked up on my recent trip up to the Great Pacific Northwest. This one is from the winery in Salem, Oregon. The angle of the photo above concentrates the color on this one, but the wine is a very light shade of red and has the body of a typical Pinot. Light, but full of fruit, not the type that is typical of Californian Pinots (Cherry, Strawberry), but the darker red fruits (Plums, Blackberries). I've linked to a great review of the 2010 version below and I have to agree with everything she says about the wine - a wonderful accompaniment for a mellow Evening.

Through trombones, trumpets, saxaphones and upstroked guitars the mode of “ska” delivery varies but the musical aesthetic of this group of artists is undeniably “punk rock.”
We’re releasing this digital comp simply because we think the bands it features are badass and deserve a little more attention in the punk scene at large. It features quality tunes from 15 amazing ska-punk acts, including previously unreleased material from Big D And The Kids Table, Mustard Plug, Mad Caddies, 4 Aspirin Morning, Ghetto Blaster and Huge Puppies.

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA
Greetings from the left coast on this sunny and warm Sunday afternoon. I've retreated to the Pinhead studios for some pinball and a wonderful IPA. This Ruthless Rye IPA has the prerequisite hoppiness but also has the killer spiciness that the rye grain brings to beers. This is Sierra Nevada's seasonal beer for the winter / spring so you might still be able to find it on your beer shoppe shelves. If you do, don't pass it up - great stuff from the brewery that has defined "Craft Beer" since 1979.

Ninkasi Renewale 2013 Extra Special Bitter
Well - it's gonna hit 90 degrees out here today - what happened to Spring? Dang global warming is ruining everything....time for a brew on a hot summer day. Grabbed a six pack of the Ninkasi Renewale ESB on my trip up to the Pacific Northwest a few weeks ago and I've cracked open the last of the lot this afternoon. The beer pours a nice copper color with a small head. Grassy hops - kinda smells like a nice New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Nice balance on this one, as is usual with the style. The brewery is located in Eugene, Oregon and is named for Ninkasi, the Sumerian goddess of Brewing. I've noticed that some of the Brewery's offerings are making it down to us here in Northern California - I need to try some more....

2011 A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir
Spring is here! A glorious day out here on the left coast - perfect for a nice light red.
The A to Z Pinot Noir is one of the wines I picked up on my trip up to the Pacific Northwest and it is a wonderful expression of the spin that the higher latitudes take on the Pinot Noir grape. Cheeries of course, but I'm getting a nice tobacco note in the aroma and some great astringent tannins on the finish. Highly recommended but a bit pricey - running around $20.

Oakshire Brewing Overcast Espresso Stout
Time for a nice hearty brew - it is just a bit overcast this afternoon out here on the Left Coast, but when I picked this craft brew up on a trip to the Pacific Northwest we had many days of overcast skies, a few rainstorms and a couple of bright sunny days too. Will never forget going up to the top of the Space Needle on one of those sunny days - no wind and the temps in the upper sixties - just wonderful.
Quoting from the label "Rich, Roasty, Enlightening. And that's just the cold brewed espresso we used to create this delicious Oatmeal Stout. So, grab a friend, Breakfast or Dinner, crack a bottle and enjoy."
I have to say that the espresso is the defining flavor in this stout, with some chocolate and malt flavors mixed in as well. This is one heck of a smooth operator and very drinkable. Low alcohol and IBU (5.8% and 37 respectively) help, but there are no off notes in this stout. It is very hard to find an Oatmeal Stout that doesn't have some sort of sharp note, whether it be the alcohol, the roast of the malt or the hops. The brewmaster at Oakshire has hit all the right notes on this one! Yum Yum Yum.

Auburn Alehouse Gold Digger IPA
Cracked open a local craft brew this fine March afternoon, It's a Gold Digger IPA from the Auburn Alehouse brewed just a few hours drive from the Pinhead Studios. This ale comes in a 22 oz. bomber and checks in at 65 IBU and 6.3% alcohol. It pours a nice amber / copper color with an off white head.
Pine notes jump right out at ya and the hops are rather predominate in the initial sip. Some nice caramel
notes in there as well with a hint of butterscotch. Bites ya on the finish with the alpha acids lingering around a bit on the tongue. One of those beers that begs for a burger or some fries to back up the mix of the malt and hop flavors. Quite nice and I'll be trying out more beers from this Alehouse. Hey - maybe it is time for a Road trip to Auburn...

2010 Tormaresco Neprica
Picked up a nice Italian Red this week. The 2010 version of Tormaresca Neprica, a wine that I had 2 vintages ago. This vintage is just as tasty and a good bargain at under a tenner. Nice berry fruits, italian spices and a bit of pepper. Medium body with a nice warm finish.

All the way from the Troeg's Brewery in Hershey, PA, I've opened up a Nugget Nectar. Thanks go out to Richard for sending a couple of these outstanding beers out my way all the way from Maine. Drinking a toast to your right now, my friend. Shhh - don't tell the Post Office, but those guys in blue do a fine job of protecting the Suds!
This beer is one of the best examples of an American Amber Ale, which the Beer Advocate's style guide describes as thus: "This Style of beer tends to focus on the malts, but hop character can range from low to high. Expect a balanced beer, with toasted malt characters and a light fruitiness in most examples". Well said and it applies perfectly to this beer. Heavy on the tropical fruits for the Nugget Nectar - lotsa bananas and citrusy notes. The balance is key to this beer that is pretty high on the alcohol (7.50) and IBU (93ish) scales. Very highly rated beer and deservedly so. The clincher for me is the superb malt flavor - words cannot describe the flavor - Heaven!

2012 La Finca Malbec
A cold and crisp late Winter day outside - perfect for a hearty Red inside. Picked up this one down at my local Trader Joe's for $3.99. At that price, I wasn't expecting much, but this one delivers, right up to the $4 mark. Yep - it's a Malbec, crazy dark purple and nice roasted earthy notes, but it lacks a bit of a backbone that some of the better Argentinian Malbecs posess. Now, don't get me wrong, I'll be back for more as the price is certainly right.

Almanac Brewing Company Biere de Chocolat American Porter
Nice and sunny out here on the Left Coast this fine Sunday afternoon. Popped the top on an Almanac Brewing Company Biere de Chocolat American Porter. This one is touted as an "California Table Beer" - meaning that the brewers "select the best in locally sourced fruit and blend it into their beers that are inspired by the great brewing traditions of the world". This one has a couple of unique ingredients:
Dandelion Chocolate - this company roasts small-batch, unique, single-origin cocoa beans to create rich complex chocolate bars that highlight the unique flavors of their different terroirs (what - is this a wine?). The chocolate used in this beer is sourced from Madagascar and Rio Caribe Venezuela.
Ivanhoe hops - sourced from farms in Clearlake, California which lend a citrusy note to the beer.
This one is only 5.5% abv. Lightly carbonated, the malts give this one a midnight black color with a very small amount of foam. Easy drinking and smooth. Glad I tried this one out at the recommendation of the local beer shoppe. Cheers!
