A beautiful Saturday afternoon is coming to an end, but have no fear as I've cracked open a nice red blend to start the evening off right. Yes - posting some Red Wine Thoughts on a Saturday, as you know there is some kinda sporting event that I'll be watching about this time tomorrow - go Niners! I thought it quite appropriate that I have a wine from the foothills of California, where the original 49ers swarmed to to find gold - yep that was 1849 - get yer history books out....
This is a Boeger Hangtown Red lot 46. Now I've waxed poetic about lot's 39 and 40 in previous posts and have been working my way through the blends. This one is the best of the Lot - no pun intended. Seems that they have gone away from the Rhone varietals and made this one with Cab, Zin, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Barbera. What a nice blend with the Zinfandel predominating - just what I like. At only about $7 smackers down at my local Trader Joes, ya can't go wrong.

2009 Pretense Paso Robles Zinfandel
A bright sunny, but crisp and cold afternoon here at the Pinhead Compound. Not to worry, I have a wonderful Zinfandel cracked open to keep me warm. This one comes from the Paso Robles area (a bit inland from San Luis Obispo and halfway between the world famous Monterey / Carmel area and Santa Barbara). This area grows some great wine grapes, most notably Zinfandel, Syrah and Merlot. This one comes in a 14.0% alcohol and has just a trace of residual sugar. Berry goodness and some nice spices round out this one. Highly recommended.

It's a cold wet one today - perfect weather for a Stout. The Firestone Walker Brewing Company's Velvet Merlin is brewed in the Oatmeal Stout style with some nice dark malts and a minimum of hops. The IBU sits at just 27 and the alcohol level is only 5.5%. This clears the path for you to taste the malts and yeast that make this one of the better Oatmeal Stouts that I have tasted. It a bit dark and dreary out here on the left coast today, but I've got a nice bottle of Red Wine to boost the cheer. This bottle came all the way from Chile, courtesy of the Santa Rita Winery. This Reserva Carmenere is a fine example of the Varietal. Some nice layered dark fruit notes with just a hint of residual sugar that is bringing out the Vanilla and Caramel notes of the aging. Salute!

If you have never heard of this brewery before, be careful, as you need a road map to navigate the Vertical, Epic, Anniversary and Collaboration beers. I suggest you start with this one - a wonderful classic West Coast India Pale Ale with the wet hopped goodness that Stone has perfected. It's a Wet and Wild Sunday out here on the Left Coast, but I have a nice bottle of Port open to keep me warm. Uncorked this one on Friday night and have a glass leftover for tonight. This Port is from the Quinta Do Noval winery in the Douro Valley in Portugal and is going great with some Chocolate Truffles that the family picked up at a local Chocolatier. We typically buy a box for a number of our relatives / friends at Christmas and end up with a free sampling of the latest flavors - hmmm - the Peanut Butter variety is so smooth - reminds me of a Reese's but taken up a few notches on the silkiness scale!

2010 Los Dos Grenache Syrah
Going over to Spain tonight via a nice Grenache Syrah blend from the Bodegas Aragoneses in the Campo de Borja region of Aragon. They named it Los Dos because of the 2 varietals that are in the blend. I call it delicious. The Grenache contributes a nice strawberry nose and the Syrah gives it a bit of the spice and smoke flavors, combining together wonderfully for a bottle that goes for about $6 down at you local market. This one has a screwtop, so you don't have to worry about any corkiness. I might have to go back for another bottle to serve with Thanksgiving dinner.

Speakeasy Scarlett Red Rye
Popped the top on a Rye this afternoon and pairing it with a Ham on Rye Sandwich. This one is from the Speakeasy Ales and Lagers group in San Francisco. I was not impressed with the Big Daddy IPA, but this one is mighty fine. I poured it out and had a sip while playing some pinball and was a bit skeptical, but once the Ham on Rye was started, the beer complemented the Sammich perfectly. So, is this one of those Food Beers? Ya know, a beer that doesn't stand up to well by itself, but works perfectly next to some tasty food. Yeah, that's the case with this one. Loving the caramel and rye flavors, but I'm picking up a sharp character that mellows with the food. Hmm - looking up at the picture - I realized that Scarlett has green shoes - interesting.....
